There’s much to commend this three-dayer in the Abruzzo Mountains, but let’s begin with breakfast.
As there’s a bakery on site, you start the day with home-made rolls, biscuits, savoury tarts and pizzas to go with local salami, fresh ricotta, home-made yogurt and fresh fruit.
Suitably refreshed, you embark on your learning odyssey, meeting sheep and observing how pecorino is produced from their milk, with plenty of trials and tastings, then using antique wooden utensils and a 16th-century woodburning oven to make bread.
You’re given cheese and a loaf to take home, but that’ll be gone by the time you get back to your bedroom in the spectacular fortified medieval burgh of Sextantio, which has been restored as a luxury guest complex.
Two dinners in local restaurants are included, as is a wine tasting. Bread, wine, cheese — what else is there?
