When an Island in the Gulf of Mexico goes missing tongues start wagging – especially when repeated searches for the paradies come up empty handed.
And it’s hardly surprising that conspiracy theories are starting to do the rounds.
The missing island in question is Bermeja, which is (or should that be was) central to Mexico’s oil claims.
And already Mexican officials have accused the CIA of blowing the island up to further the US’s grip on oil reserves in the Gulf.
Now we don’t know whether the island ever existed, but we’re not about to go out in search of it.
The reason is we know plenty of island paradises in the Gulf of Mexico which have so much more to offer than an oil industry outpost ever could.
And top of our list is Isla Holbox, a beautiful spot just off the coast of Cancun.
The island is a well kept secret and is barely visited by anyone (expect the odd Mexican from the Yucatan region).
A holiday to Isla Holbox is like stepping back in time to the 50s or 60s, with the odd opulent villa the only thing to interrupt the otherwise untouched landscape.
And while this paradise is well off the tourist map, it is very unlikely to just disappear.
