For those who thought that giant squids were the preserve of B-movies and hoary old sea tales, the Gulf of Mexico has just proved otherwise.

Scientists in the region have dredged up a genuine example of the genus, which could have some holidaymakers heading for the hills. In fact, at 20 feet long and 103 pounds, the giant squid could see those who prefer to stay on dry land heading for Sierra Nevada, Mexico’s highest point.

The colossal cephalopod, which will be studied at the Smithsonian Institution National Museum of Natural History in the US, has even stunned the experts.

"This was beyond everyone’s expectations," said Deborah Epperson, a US biologist who is part of the team examining what was the first catch of its kind in over 50 years.

We’ve been shouting about the amazing sealife to be found in the Gulf of Mexico for years – whether the discovery of one of nature’s rarest creatures makes you want to get involved or get inland to a safe distance at one of Mexico’s other beauty spots is your call!

If you are one for the depths, or you’ve always wondered what sea safari would be like, Mexico’s diving is some of the best around and a holiday to Mexico – in particular the Gulf of Mexico – could be just the ticket.ADNFCR-2390-ID-19377572-ADNFCR
