The end of the world is fast approaching, so now could be a great time to take that dream trip to Mexico.

At least that’s what the doomsayers with a sketchy knowledge of the Mayan calendar are claiming.

The date for the apocalypse has already been set for December 21st 2012 (apparently).

It turns out 2012 was a big deal for the ancient Mayans because of the number of major astronomical events that are set to take place – including one that only occurs every 25,800 years.

So it was inevitable that scare stories and apocalypse warnings would start surfacing.

But one Mayan elder is quick to point out that these major celestial events do not, in any way, signify the end of the world.

Apolinario Chile Pixtun claims that, in true Dan Brown style, the doomsday stories that have sprung up around the Mayan calendar are Western in origin and have little to do with Mexico’s cultural heritage. In fact, December 21st 2012 will be the anniversary of creation (not destruction) in the Mayan calendar.

Pixtun said: "I came back from England last year and, man, they had me fed up with this stuff."

Whether or not you believe in the scare stories, if you want to play the adventurous historian and uncover the mysteries of an ancient empire for yourself, Mexico is a great place to start. And if you do find any evidence that the world is about to end while you’re there, then let us know and we’ll head somewhere with golden beaches, like Cancun for instance, to ride out the apocalypse while we top up our tans.ADNFCR-2390-ID-19411471-ADNFCR
