The Isla Mujeres, off the east coast of Mexico, is renowned for its beautiful beaches.
Sat in the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico, between the lively town of Cancun and Cuba, the island is an idyllic getaway that screams both tropical paradise and luxury.
We have been touting its potential as an elite holiday destination for years – and with good reason.
The beaches are powdery and white, the peaceful seaside resorts are the epitome of extravagance and the health spas are in a class of their own.
Relaxation is Isla Mujeres’ ultimate appeal.
But there is another side to this beautiful island – and surprisingly it’s Mujeres’ architecture.
Fittingly, for an island praised for its exceptional beaches, the two most famous buildings on it are a pair of giant seashells designed by architect Eduardo Ocampo.
The luxurious villas are available for hire for the majority of the year and have had some big name A-listers signing their guestbooks, including Jane Fonda and Cher.
What’s more, the original design for the houses, two seashells stuck to a piece of wood, and plenty of original artwork is on display in the building’s extremely comfortable living room – so you won’t be far from the height of Western culture as you unwind in style during your trip to Mexico.
