The amazing cultural centrepiece of Sydney – the Opera House – is a beacon for the arts in this vibrant city. And as you stroll down the quayside towards the monolith to contemporary theatre, the lively cafes and bars will draw you in and make it almost impossible to tear yourself away – always a good sign we think.
But for the next couple of weeks, central Sydney and its incredible harbour will lose their monopoly on the arts as the Sculpture by the Sea exhibition arrives on Bondi beach.
Sculpture by the Sea is the biggest outdoor fine art exhibition of its kind, with more than 100 individual works of art by both Australian and international sculptors.
The sculptural walk runs from Bondi to Tamarama and gives you a perfect chance to top up your tan on the city’s finest surfing beach and soak up some 21st century culture while you’re at it.
Highlights include Time and Tide Granite Monolith II, which won 91-year-old artist May Barrie the Balnaves Foundation Sculpture Prize, and American artist Tim Prentice’s Easel Windframe, which scooped the Transfield Holdings Kinetic Art Prize.
So as summer picks up in Australia, look no further than Sydney if you’re into surfing, sunbathing and sculpture.
