At 3000 feet above sea level, Ksar Shama is a peaceful, traditional yet comfortable mountain retreat which we love. Head up for some fresh Atlas air, and as you wind through berber villages you’ll leave the hustle and bustle of the city souks behind. In summer, relax by the stylish outdoor pool shaded by olive trees, and dine in the warm evening air, lit by twinkling lanterns. Take a guided walk through the mountains and stop for a picnic overlooking a lush valley, and try out a traditional Hammam and massage: this is an authentic mountain experience at it’s best.

Ksar Shama sits in the heart of the Atlas mountains in 13 hectares of olive trees and bougainvilleas, in true berber country, and is positioned as the gateway to the Toubkal National Park. The perfect spot for incredibly scenic mountain walks, the retreat also acts a great base for total relaxation in fresh mountain air.

We love that Ksar Shama has only 4 suites (or Kasbahs) and 17 rooms, all set in bungalows scattered around the gardens, making you feel like a guest in a friend’s home. Each large room has been built in a traditional way, with adobe and tadelakt walls painted warm earthy colours, wood beam ceilings, Moroccan fabrics and locally-sourced crafts. From your cosy bed, adorned with piles of bright cushions, you can look out of your huge windows to admire the incredible panoramic views.

Step out across traditionally woven carpets and out onto your private terrace to see incredibly bright stars, or stunning views of the snow-capped Atlas. Perfect all year round, every room at Ksar Shama has air conditioning as well as cosy fireplace.
why we like it
For a more authentic, rustic and atmospheric experience compared to other hotels in the area, you can’t beat Ksar Shama. From your private bungalow you’ll rarely see another guest here – unless you chose to cool off in the main pool, or dine at the restaurant, where the chef uses vegetable grown in the grounds, and also produced his own fruity olive oil. Delicious.
