The remote village of Tortuguero epitomises why Costa Rica is such as South American gem.

It is the place to be for serious wildlife lovers who think of themselves as a cross between the national treasure that is Sir David Attenborough and the gung–ho survival expert that is Bear Grylls.

Just a short trip form Limon along the country’s languid canals and rivers, which can be traversed by canoe or powerboat, and you’re in the thick of the rainforest.

Once you’re there you’ll be surrounded by creatures which you would never have dreamed of laying eyes on. There are more than 60 species of frogs, 400 types of birds, as well as reptiles, jaguars and monkeys. In short, easily as much wildlife as the savannas and national parks of Africa can boast.

When we last went it was the region’s turtles that were at the top of our list of things to see (Turtuguero literally means Home of Turtles). And if you head there at the end of November you’ll be able watch the adults of the species return to the rich coast to lay their eggs.

And even when you’re far off the beaten track, deep in a jungle tourists never head to, you’re still just a stones-throw from some of the most spectacular beaches on the planet – talk about being spoilt for choice.ADNFCR-2390-ID-19486780-ADNFCR
