As one of the Seven Wonders of the Underwater World, the Great Barrier Reef is understandably top of many people’s must-see lists when it comes to travel.
However, this probably means that you won’t find much in the line of peace and quiet when you get to the most popular sections.
So why not try Australia’s West Coast instead for shopping, surfing, coral reefs and fine wines which you can sip as you listen to the waves lapping the golden sands?
It’s likely to be much more serene than the tourist resorts, but this side of Australia doesn’t compromise on things to do or great scenery either.

Check out lively Perth and its nearby vineyards, Broome and its wide-open expanses of beautiful grassland, cliffs and beaches and – here’s our favourite bit – the Ningaloo reef.
This is a virtually untouched 260km length of coral that you can walk to from the beach (don’t worry non-swimmers, the sea will only reach your knees). You can enjoy the sensation of fish sucking your toes, or, if you want something a little more exciting and are confident in the water, let us organise for you to swim with whale sharks.
Just because you want to head Down Under doesn’t mean you have to put up with the rest of the world jostling for space too – try our Alternative Reefs & World Class Wine experience and see the other side of Oz.
