New Zealand’s oceans are abundant in marine wildlife and at Kaikoura, located on the south island, the marine environment is so rich in nutrients that it consistently attracts some of the most magnificent whale species through out the year. Among them are the giant Sperm whales, that can grow up to 20 metres in length and are notorious for their 15-foot ‘blows’; the migratory Humpback whales, Pilot whales and the infamous Orca (or Killer) whales.
These fascinating creatures are still very much a mystery to us but hopefully not for long. A 42-day expedition to Antarctica, led by New Zealander Andrew Leachman of Nelson, is due to depart next month with a fleet of Kiwi and Aussie scientist. They will observe, study and record pods of whales migrate from the waters of New Zealand down to the South Pole, hopefully shining some light on these mystical mammals of the sea.
If you want to see the breathtaking whales in New Zealand why not head back to nature and let us arrange the ultimate whale watching experience for you.
