There’s nothing quite like the experience of travelling long haul in cattle class. You’re tired, groggy and you feel like a prune. You’re eyes keep rolling back in your head. The person behind you constantly uses your chair as a personal human lift. The person in front of you might as well be sitting in your lap. And no matter how many alcoholic drinks you have, contortionist positions you pull, or different pillows you use, you simply can’t get a wink of sleep. The thought of lying down flat snuggling into your blanket is something only millionaires in first class could only ever experience. Well not anymore.
Air New Zealand are breaking the boundaries with their economy class which will completely transform international air travel. Three years in the making, a team of top designers, boat builders, seat manufacturers and Boeing unveiled the first ever lie-flat economy seats yesterday.
The new ‘skycouch’ and the premium economy ‘spaceseats’ are due to be introduced later this year to travellers.
The ‘skycouch’ is a row of three seats that have been engineered to creat a lie-flat, flexible space between the seat-backs, providing a flat surface for adults to relax and sleep on. For two adults travelling together, the ‘skycouch’ purchase will be based on buying two seats at standard prices with the third seat at approximately half price.
The premium economy cabins will feature the ‘spaceseat’ offering unparalleled comfort and legroom making travellers feel they’ve snuggled into their own bed. They’ve even thought of a new bean-bag footstool for extra comfort.
But wait. There’s more. On demand food and beverage options, shared-meal experiences like tapas and pizzas, kitchen facilities to cook food from scratch, fine wines from Marlborough, Central Otago and Hawke’s Bay, and in-flight entertainment that can include wine tasting and destination seminars.
There’s now one more reason to travel.
