The Kwandwe Ecca Lodge turns the traditional game lodge experience on its head, fusing traditional farmhouse simplicity with chic boutique style. Antique light fittings, splashes of colour and modern art adorn the minimalistic stone gabion walls, whilst trees grow through the wooden decking that surrounds the property. The barriers between you and the wildlife are almost invisible, and you’ll often see elephants and other animals wandering past whilst you’re lazing by the pool.

The lodge is located in the Malaria-free Eastern Cape, in the 22,000 hectare Kwandwe Private Game Reserve near Grahamstown. The lodge itself is set amongst the greenery on the sloping banks of the Great Fish River and wild animals roam just beyond the invisible borders. There are large numbers of the big five here (lion, elephant, leopard, buffalo and rhino), as well as cheetah, giraffe, zebra, aarkvarks, aardwolfs, and an abundance of birdlife.

With the curtains closed you could be in a large New York penthouse. Vibrant colours, mosaic glass mirrors and polished concrete floors all create a funky atmosphere, yet pull back the drapes in the morning and you will be presented with an unmistakably African view. Spending time here is all about taking in the magnificent views and the rooms reflect this, with huge glass windows and even a glass-surrounded shower so that you can watch the wildlife whilst getting ready in the morning (what a luxury). We also just have to mention your own private decked veranda, which has its own plunge pool: perfect for a dip after a hot day out on safari.
