hotel description
Formerly the private retreat of the reserve owner, this 250 year-old Victorian homestead has recently been sympathetically restored into the ultimate African retreat. This is not so much a hotel as your own private house, miles from anywhere or anyone else. It’s just you and the incredible natural beauty that lies beyond the thick stone walls. (And your private guide, chef and butler, naturally)
location
Set in a beautiful valley, in a private game reserve, thirty minutes away from the main lodge, you’re miles from anyone and can enjoy falling asleep with nothing but the sounds of the Karoo wildlife around you. The Karoo is one of the most astounding areas of natural beauty in South Africa: huge skies and enormous plains, interrupted only by the mountains. And with so few people around, you are going to feel like you have this amazing place all to yourself.
your room
There are only five rooms in the retreat, meaning no more than ten people in the lodge. The rooms are beautiful and simple with stone walls, wood-beamed reed ceilings and traditional furnishings. There is of course some luxury, notably the Jacuzzi on the veranda with views over the Karoo, clean crisp sheets and amazing food, but crucially the retreat has kept the feel of an original Victorian homestead.
why we like it
This is quite simply a unique place from which to enjoy the great scenery and magnificent wildlife of South Africa. Imagine a beautiful farmhouse in unbelievable surroundings, hours from civilisation. As you enjoy a romantic candle-lit dinner (the on-site generator is for essential electricity only) on the veranda whilst taking in the sounds and smells of the Karoo, you’ll feel like you’ve gone back in time.
