New Zealand’s Department of Conservation has listed a real-life dream job: ‘caretaker required for a remote New Zealand island, D’Urville Island, located in the sunny Marlborough Sounds.’

They’re looking for a willing volunteer or two to look after a pristine conservation area, Moawhitu Reserve, on D’Urville Island. Whilst the job comes with no pay, what’s included is a rent-free large four bedroom house, stunning scenery, a magnificent beach, a lake, several bays, a mature forest and the prospects for an idyllic lifestyle. What more could you ask for?

D’Urville is New Zealand’s 8th largest island steeped in history, untouched beauty and prolific wildlife. The island is possum free, which means the native bush is alive with many of New Zealand’s native birds and surrounding waters are populated with dolphins, seals and plenty of fish. Absolute bliss.

The job opening comes after the retirement of the island’s recent care workers, Brenda Hatwell and Bernie Coggan, who have looked after the reserve for three years.

But the Department of Conservation isn’t just looking for anyone. They would like someone who is sympathetic to conservation, a handy person to keep the place going and the ability to get along with people. One of the major duties include looking after the island’s airstrip which is used by small planes visiting the island.

Why not check out D’Urville Island whilst on our world class wine and indulgent cuisine experience?
