Calling all gourmet bush tuckers: worm sushi, bush bacon butties and deep fried shark will be on the menu at New Zealand’s iconic Hokitika Wildfoods Festival, held annually in March on the remote South Island west coast.
The Hokitika Wildfoods Festival is a celebration of the weird and wonderful in the world of New Zealand food. Already popular amongst our fellow Kiwis at the festival are whitebait fritters, West Coast gorse flower wine and local brewery, Monteith’s beer. But for those who are seeking more adventure there will be many exotic tastes to tickle your senses, from natural Viagra in the form of mountain oysters or young lambs testicles to wild boar and venison, pickled huhu grubs and mountain sheep tongue. Keep an eye out for possum pies, wasp larvae ice-cream, cucumber fish, sheep’s milk cheeses and wok fried clams which are all more delicious than they sound!
Hokitika sits between a river mouth and a rugged West Coast beach in the South Island of New Zealand and has breathtaking views of the Southern Alps as its backdrop. Apart from the Wildfood Festival, Hokitika is well-known for being home to some of New Zealand’s most beautiful jade, or pounamu by its Maoris name, and it is here you can find the most beautiful carved pounamu in traditional Maori style.
