With Dubai embracing modernity at every turn, there is one Middle Eastern country that remains old school: Oman. As you’d expect in a nation which banned sunglasses and bicycles until the Seventies, this isn’t the kind of place John Terry goes on his hols.
Capital city Muscat is the main hub, although it’s tempting to loll around on Al Bustan’s 1km-long private beach, you’ll be missing out. A one-day Muscat itinerary should include the Sultan’s Palace and walled city, stopping off for an avocado milkshake at Khargreen Cafe and street-food shawarma (pitta bread filled with meat). Then, attempt haggling at the Muttrah Souq, followed by a dhow (traditional boat) ride. Cap the evening at Indian restaurant Mumtaz Mahal.
You can escape the city by taking a trip into the desert while luxury hunters have to stay at the Chedi at Zighy Bay on the Musandam Peninsular. Arrivals check-in either via a scenic drive down the hill, sailing into the bay or by paragliding from a cliff!
April climate
It’s the best time of year to visit before it gets hot and humid during te summer with temperatures of 25-32 degrees C during the day and 17-19 degrees C at night.
