The following day will take you away from the bright lights of Thimpu into Punakha Valley for a trek up to Chimi Lhakhang Monastery. Cast any preconceptions you may have about temples aside. This is a pilgrimage fertility hot spot for childless couples and when you get there you’ll understand why. Then, after a night at the luxury Amankora, it’s time for a road trip east into the centre of Bhutan. With a personal chauffeur, naturally, all you need to do is sit back and soak up the breathtaking views. Climbing steadily through virgin pine forest and dwarf bamboo, make sure you look out for the red panda and grey languar along the way. As you reach nearly 11,000 feet, prepare for a Himalayan mountain panorama stretching for several hundred miles. Need we say more?
After continuing east, the highlight of this trip truly begins: an intrepid 3-day trek through the beautiful Bumthang Valley. But fear not, an expert local guide, porters and a private chef will be on hand every step of the way to help make this an unforgettable journey. Hike alongside winding rivers, through forests of rhododendrons and discover ancient temples dotted along the way. This is the spiritual heartland of Bhutan and the best way to experience this mythical region is on foot. By night private camps will be set up along the route. So, sleep easy under the stars, safe in the knowledge that tomorrow is another day in this Himalayan heaven.

The last leg of your trip takes you back west, stopping off in Phobjikha Valley along the way. Totally cut off from the electric-grid, this valley is an ecotourism hub and migratory home of the deeply revered black-necked cranes. Take a short gentle hike around the glacial valley and visit the crane information centre. Trust us, even if you’re not a twitcher, this is an incredible insight into why this ‘heavenly bird’ is such an integral part of Buddhist culture.
Finally, no trip to Bhutan would be complete without a hike up to the legendary Tiger’s Nest Monastery, one of the country’s most spiritual and dramatic sites. If you can imagine a fairytale-like castle clinging precariously to the edge of a sheer rock cliff with a 900m plunge into the valley below you’re getting close. But nothing beats seeing it up close and personal.
Spend your last night at the ultra chic Uma Paro. Nestled on the side of a hill with spectacular views over misty mountains, this boutique retreat is understated elegance at its best. Make the most of this tranquil haven; it will leave you with wonderful long-lasting memories of this remote and mystical Kingdom.
