We all love Mauritius for her sparkling azure waters and beautiful palm-fringed beaches. But sometimes we fancy something a bit different. So let us introduce you to an alternative side to this Indian Ocean gem. Staying in some of our favourite rustic hideaways, it’s time to side step the generic and discover Mauritius the way nature intended it.
the island’s best kept secret
The moment you touch down on Mauritius you’re hit by the balmy air and sweet smelling sugar cane, you know you’ve just landed in seventh heaven. But this is only the beginning. Your adventure starts in Chamarel in the south-west. We love this area for its exotic scenery, strangely multicoloured sands and panoramic views, but best of all for the Lakaz Chamarel Hotel. Hidden away on the edge of the Black River Gorges National Park, this bolthole is one of our favourite finds on the island.
blue lagoons and 4x4s
As you spend your first three days unwinding in one of the 11 villas and feasting on mouth-watering local cuisine, you’ll find it hard to tear yourself away. But, believe us, you’ll seriously regret if you don’t. First stop is Le Morne Brabant Mountain. We’ll set you up with your own private guide to hike up this World Heritage site and discover one of the most unspoilt and stunning parts of the island. The mountain sits on the extreme south-western tip, surrounded by the most picture perfect shimmering blue lagoon; you can’t help think if only you were shipwrecked here for good. But if physical exertion really isn’t your thing, why not explore the isle from the comfort of your own 4×4. You’ll cruise past some of the most dramatic gorges, fabulous waterfalls, dense jungle and beautiful coastline. South west Mauritius has some serious wow factor and it’s all there waiting to be discovered.

sand and the city
After a few days delving into the unknown south, it’s time to be whisked up north for beaches, boating and shopping. A great combo if you ask us. You’ll spend the next 7 nights at 20 Degrees Sud – an intimate, ultra-laid back retreat that we just can’t keep under our hats.
From here get steamy in the city and head down to Port Louis, Mauritius’ vibrant capital. Wander around its colourful, spice-laden markets and soak in the atmosphere with a few cocktails and watch the glam set stroll past. When you’ve had your fix of the tropical city life head to the emerald waters for a cruise on your own private catamaran. Disembarking on Flat Island, your crew will cook you up a BBQ lunch on a wild beach overlooking the ocean with no one else in sight. Pure paradise.

But if you want to pump up the adrenalin, take to the skies in a hydroplane and circle the crystal clear lagoons. This is the Indian Ocean out of the ordinary. Just how we like it.
