Climbing the East-West Highway 380m above the Coral Sea, you’ll whizz through orchards and farms, and into the lush surroundings of World Heritage Rainforest. Along the way, make a quick stop at Kuranda. Home to the Aboriginal Djabugay people for over 100,000 years, the beauty, peace and fertile earth of Kuranda have attracted everyone from gold prospectors in the 1800s, to free-thinking creatives in the tree-swinging sixties. Kuranda boasts an unrivalled selection of one-off indigenous artifacts and the best collection of Aboriginal instruments in the world. But before you get down to the serious business of buying that 10ft didgeridoo your father-in-law’s always secretly wanted, why not get to know the area on the Skyrail up to Barron Falls. At 853ft, Barron Falls is where the Barron River cascades from the verdant elevation of the Atherton Tablelands down to the Cairns Coastal Plain. A spectacular sight and a great way to work up an appetite before heading down to one of Kuranda’s finest restaurants.

Fresh from the culture and cascades of Kuranda, it’s time to drive down to the Mareeba Wetlands. 35km South West of Kuranda at the foot of the Hann Tableland, Mareeba boasts 5000 acres of stunning savannas and wetlands made up of 12 inter-connected lagoons giving life to a wealth of animal and birdlife. Hole up in the Jabiru Safari Lodge, where you’ll find your very own African-style safari cabin with its own private timber terrace granting full access to the Mareeba experience whenever you want it. Comfortable, stylish and set right within the reserve, this is the perfect hideaway for a bushwhacked soul.

Boasting a list of safari options so long it rivals the number of resident species, you won’t be stuck for places to canoe and animals to see in Mareeba. Whether it’s a splay-footed Jacana hot-stepping from lily to lily or a nondescript log subtly transmuting into a grinning freshwater croc, there are subjects aplenty for the serious shutterbug and snap-happy amateur alike. But make sure to keep your peepers peeled for Kadimakara – a 19 meter long lizard. Don’t worry, this big guy won’t bite. Nestled deep in the savanna, Kadimakara is a steel sculpture installed by the Japanese artist Tanabe-san to promote the conservation of wild rice, and one you sure won’t be able to miss.

When day four dawns feel free to continue your Mareeba Wetlands adventure, but we thought we’d let you in on a few hidden gems in the area worth a visit while you’re in this neck of the outback.

We all know Australia for its fine amber nectar export, but brewing in North Queensland you’ll find aromatic coffee plantations that have been stealing awards left, right and centre. Just a few minutes from the Mareeba you’ll stumble across The Coffee Works – Australia’s foremost roasters and purveyors of all things coffee-related and fine chocolaty. We gave the lime and black pepper dark chocolate a try, and then another try and then bought a crate. If you’re a true coffee fanatic, then you can’t miss out on the Skybury Plantation which provides its delicious beans world wide. If you recently sat in the Houses of Parliament, you’d know just how good these beans taste.

After a final night at the Jabiru Safari Lodge in Mareeba, it’s time to say goodbye to the wonderful reserve and set your coordinates for Cairns, a 64km drive East along the Kennedy Highway. Located on the edge of the Karoo, the Samara Private Game Reserve is one of the largest and most spectacular private game reserves in South Africa, boasting a massive 70,000 acres of expansive plains and dramatic mountains. As soon as you arrive at the reserve you’ll jump into a 4×4 and begin the ascent into the mountains to get to your next destination, the awesomely remote Samara Mountain Retreat. This restored 250 year-old Victorian settler farm sits in the mountains and is over 30 minutes drive from the nearest lodge. You’ll literally be miles from civilisation, surrounded only by wildlife and indescribably dramatic scenery. Head out on foot for a gourmet picnic at one of the many viewpoints in the mountains and you’ll be overwhelmed by the sheer scale of the surroundings, with vast plains below stretching out to mountains in the distance. This is the perfect opportunity to find out what it was like to be one of the original settlers of these lands all those years ago.

Take a trip down the mountains and check out the breath-taking terrain of the Karoo up close. The Karoo Lodge overlooks the romantic plains of Camdeboo, a vast expanse of arid grassland that is typical of the Karoo landscape. Huge conservation efforts are returning this area to its former glory. In particular there are strong concentrations of the majestic cheetah and you’ll have a good chance of seeing this elusive beast on the plains. The Samara Private Game Reserve also boasts record sightings of the quirky aardvark, a notoriously difficult creature to find. And if you have time between game drives make sure you check out the cave paintings nearby to get an insight into the history of this magical place.

Lie back in breathtaking rooms, bathe under the stars in your outdoor shower, or swing away in your deck hammock amongst ebony trees by the banks of the watercourse. Garonga describe their way of life as ‘safari for the soul,’ and we are inclined to agree. It’s total bliss.

Take bush drives to track lions, elephants and perhaps the odd leopard. Or, for a day you won’t soon forget, go on a walking bush tour where there’ll be nothing between you and the king of beasts except a well armed guide. Back at camp, it’s time to relax. From epic palm covered beaches to legendary tea estates, historical fortress towns and spectacular National Parks, Sri Lanka has it all. So if you want to experience more than just the hotel swimming pool we’ll make sure that you get a proper taste of this tea-toting colonial gem.

tea time As soon as you arrive in Colombo, you’ll take a trip inland, uphill and back in time to the colonial bungalows of Tea Trails. These remnants of the Colonial era sit proudly against an endless green vista of rolling tea-carpeted hills, and were once home to British Tea planters. The gardens, extensive libraries and croquet lawns create a little bit of England in these remote surroundings. Spend some time learning about where your morning brew comes from before exploring this remarkable territory on foot. If you’re feeling adventurous you can climb Adam’s Peak or go white water rafting in the nearby rapids. And for a bit of R&R when you’re back you can laze in the (very British) rose gardens and enjoy the quiet surroundings, while pondering just how much the world has changed.

In addition to the highest density of leopard anywhere in the world, there are sambar, spotted and barking deer, water buffalo, abundant birdlife, butterfly swarms, iguanas, mongooses, fishing cats, wild boar, monkeys and crocodiles. The park is home to herds of up to a hundred Elephants, and with Sri Lanka’s national parks hosting 10% of the world’s wild elephant population, you’re sure not to miss out. You may even get to meet the rare sloth bear, better known as Baloo from Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book. Add camping amongst some of the most extraordinary scenery on the planet and dining under the stars, and you’ll be left with memories you won’t easily forget.

Start off at the breathtaking Victoria Falls, named after our Queen Vic. This immense waterfall is still referred to by the locals as Mosi-oa-Tuny, its Kololo name, which directly translates to ‘the smoke that thunders’. And thunder it does. With 550 million litres of water cascading over the lip every minute, there’s certainly a crash when its falls 100m to the bottom.

Why not go for a dip Black Tomato style? We can arrange for a bungee jump off the Victoria Falls Bridge where you’ll plummet down 111 meters ending your decent with your head dunking into the refreshing waters (if you like). But, it doesn’t stop there, there’s white water rafting, micro lighting and even helicopter rides each giving you the most memorable experience of the Victoria Falls. And for those who want to take it easy, hop on the African Queen and cruise on the Zambezi River to enjoy a sunset dinner before retreating to your haven at the Tongabezi Lodge.

It’s time to get acquainted with some wildlife, and where else better to start than the world famous Okavango Delta. With more water than ever it means even more incredible wildlife enabling visitors to take boat rides deep into parts of the Delta and opened up waterways inaccessible for decades.

Flying towards the heart of the Delta you’ll land on Xaxaba Island (pronounced ‘KaKaaba’) and set up base at the Eagle Island luxury tented Camp. Here you’ll have a real sense of remoteness as you’re surrounded by marshland, floodplains and waterways putting you directly in wildlife heaven. Technically, you don’t need to leave your room to see some safari action going on here. But we seriously suggest you do.

Spend three days heading out onto the shallow waterfront on a Mokoro canoe, where you’ll silently part the reeds to see everything from elephant and rhino to egrets, owls and wild dogs. Then, delve deeper into the Delta in a speed boat for an exhilarating ride, swerving in between the reeds to get to your much deserved wildlife. And finally, take to the sky on your complimentary helicopter ride where you’ll hang out (yep they’ve taken the door off) to grab that shot worthy of the National Geographic.

Next, fly up north to Zarafa Camp. As this is a land-based camp, the majority of your stay here will revolve around game drives and nature walks. And this place arguably has some of the most exciting game viewing in Africa. Spend your days roaming the arid bush in an open-top 4×4 in search for big predators and hapless prey. Night drives are one of the camp’s highlights where you can catch the glistening eyes of one of the big 5; a moment you won’t forget. The butler will (of course) show you to your suite where you can make yourself comfortable before being shown to brunch. You’ll stop in Matjiesfontein, where you will get the strange feeling of stepping back in time to 19th century London. Sip on a glass of sherry before wandering the streets past old London lampposts and Victorian style buildings. Then grab a ride back to the train on a red double-decker bus. We promise – you are still in Africa. Back on the train, it’s high tea in the afternoon and a seriously sophisticated dinner in the evening. Ostrich fillet accompanied by local Cape wine? How divine.

The next day, you’ll arrive in Pretoria ready for your private charter flight to Kruger National Park. The lodges in the park wind their way along the Sweni River, and perfectly blend the textures and colours of the bush in ultimate luxury. You’ll be staying at the most sought after safari spot in Africa, The Singita Sweni Lodge. Sit on your private game viewing deck or curl up by your fire inside the gorgeous luxury suite. You can soak in a bathtub with breathtaking views over the river from your floor to ceiling windows, or take your shower outside under the stars.
You barely have to leave your deck to view Africa’s most magnificent wildlife. It doesn’t get any better than at sunrise and sunset, when you’ve got the best opportunity to see a few big cats wandering past. If you do venture out on a guided drive (unmissable if you ask us), the place is packed with wildlife – elephants, lions, rhino, buffalo and leopard. Kruger National Park is, hands down, the best place to see the ‘Big Five’ in Africa. Take a night drive and you’ll get a look at some rare, nocturnal and camera shy creatures, you’d otherwise miss. Watch packs of hyenas and black backed jackals appear as they go on the hunt while an African Scops Owl glides silently overhead. This is the ultimate safari experience.

After a couple of days in the bush, it’s time for a bit of ocean side luxury, and we know the perfect place: Azura Retreat, Mozambique.
