Sitting on a harbour twice the size of Sydney’s, a stop in Darwin provides the perfect chic city break for some pampering between dusty outback experiences. Once a rough-and-ready frontier town, Darwin’s now a bustling mecca of art, beach markets and tropical coastal life.
From your base at Mantra on the Esplanade, where your room will overlook the harbour, you’re a stone’s throw from buzzing Mindil Beach, where you can see live music, and shop for anything from clothes to snacks and local artwork. Visit the contemporary Karen Brown gallery and top off the day with a sunset dinner on the boardwalk of Cullen Bay. Delicious.
