Bullo River Station
If you think you recognise the half a million acres of grassy plains where Bullo River Station is found, you probably do. This is where the epic 2008 film Australia was set, and it’s little wonder why. Hundreds of wallabies, dingoes, crocodiles, babbling brooks, crystal clear swimming holes, termite mounds, wild buffalos, rugged hills inscribed with Aboriginal Art, coffee coloured waters of the Victoria River and (let’s not forget) 9000 Brahman-cross cattle are all on your door step. This top end cattle station-turned-guesthouse really gets the whip cracking for the ultimate Australian outback experience.
Location
Bullo River Station is situated in the north west corner of the Northern Territory near it’s border with Western Australia. A private chartered plane will drop you in this rustic haven in less than 90 minutes from Darwin or a short 30 minutes from Kununurra. Alternatively, travel by road in a 4WD across the rugged terrain to Bullo.
Your room
You’ll find the 12 rooms of Bullo River Station beside the main homestead in miles of open plains. We love that the simple décor of cool tiled floors, indigenous art on the walls and lack of phones or television will ensure your stay is an authentic one. All rooms have direct access to the homestead lawns, swimming pool, main verandah and dining room where most of your meals will be served… unless you’re enjoying a picnic in the outback of course. You’ll be reminded about the importance of a meal at Bullo River Station, not just because you need to eat, but because most of your meals depend on the organic beef from the surrounding pastures, the local produce, and how skilled (or lucky) you are with a fishing rod.
Why we like it
We love how you can get hands dirty at Bullo by helping out with the roping and branding of cattle, or fishing for the giant Barramundi in the Victoria River. Alternatively, simply take it easy and relax by a remote waterhole surrounded by sandy beaches. There is something for everyone at Bullo, and every day will be different from the last.
