Central America is earmarked as a must visit region and there’s no surprise why. If you’re wanting stunning beaches, lush tropical jungle and flaming volcanoes, you need look no further than Nicaragua. Beautiful landscapes still untouched by mass market tourism, pretty colonial towns, warm coastal waters and stunning beaches with a plethora of adventurous activities to enjoy - it’s a cliché, but for a tropical holiday, Nicaragua really does ‘have it all’.

Colonial classic

Arriving into the capital, Managua, you’ll be whisked away to the city of Leon for two nights staying at the charming Hotel Convento. Leon boasts a raw colonial atmosphere that we rarely come across today, so count yourself in for a treat. Wander the cobble streets, pop into stunning cathedrals, or simply sit back in the main square and watch the bustling city pass by.

Volcano surfing

Spend the next day zip lining through the jungle canopy, trekking and horse riding around the Masaya Volcano range and having a crack at perhaps the most extreme activity in the world - volcano surfing. In Cerro Negro you can ride the ‘ring of fire’ as you surf down the side of the volcano, passing over still warm ashes. A simply phenomenal experience.

Adventure galore

Next, head to Ometepe Island. Floating in the middle of Lake Nicaragua this island boasts not only an abundance of wildlife and fauna, but its very own volcanoes. Bed in Totoco Eco Lodge where you can get knee deep in all sorts of activities that take your fancy. Hike, climb or mountain bike volcanoes, kayak through the lilly-laden lake, discover old crumbling ruins, or enjoy the smell fresh plucked coffee from the surrounding plantations.

The perfect eco-lodge

Spend the next week at Morgan’s Rock – a beach eco lodge tucked away in lush rainforest on the west coast of Nicaragua. Wake up in a king size bed beside a huge tree trunk which grows through your cabin. How does eating fish you have caught that day and drinking juice from the surrounding fruit trees sound? Shrouded by tropical vegetation, ultra-clean Pacific Ocean waters and pristine beaches, this luxury lodge will make you feel awfully close to nature.

And no, it’s not a hippy camp. More like hip paradise.
