intimate charm in the mountains of the north

A beautifully restored boutique riad set in the Moroccan countryside, Dar Gabriel mirrors the charm and secrecy of the village it’s found in; Chefchaouen. With seven bedrooms all en suite, it’s simple, colourful design and cosy layout of alcoves and terraces creates an intimate atmosphere nestled in the hills, not forgetting the amazing views overlooking the terracotta medina roofs with the pine and cedar clad Rif mountains rising behind the town.

Location

Set in the valleys of the Rif Mountains the hillside town of Chefchaouen is just two hour’s drive from the straits of Gibraltar, yet it feels like worlds away from its European neighbours. Exotic, and with an air of mystique it’s the perfect window to peer into the wonders of Northern Africa. With no cars or taxi’s allowed in the main medina, your free to wander the streets and labyrinth of alleyways of cobbled white walkways fringed with cornflower blue buildings. 3 minutes walk from the medina and the buzzing souks and you’ll find the Dar Gabriel.

Your room

Rooms are spacious and airy, and are filled with authentic rugs and lamps designed by local craftsmen of the village. All rooms boast cosy fire places for those chillier nights, and large terraces with spectacular views over the blue and white village set against the dramatic rocky landscape. Four bedrooms on the middle floor are linked by a cedar landing opening onto the courtyard and fountain, escape the midday sun and relax by the fountain with a glass of mint tea. True Moroccan heaven.

Why we like it

The service at the riad is second to none. The owner Ben caters for your every need with the friendliest and most personal service. His wife cooks some of the best home cooked food you’ll eat in <a href="http://www.blacktomato.com/country/morocco/"title="Morocco" >Morocco, with simple tagines and cous cous dishes with subtle flavours. It’s the perfect laidback atmosphere to enjoy this secret and intriguing village.

rabat, fez to chefchouen

Maybe you’ve done the Marrakech route or you’re craving to deepen your thirst for more authentic Moroccan culture. If so, you’re in luck. The less trodden paths of the Northern region of this fascinating country are bursting with quaint romantic cities, awe-inspiring roman ruins, and stretches of beautiful coastline. So escape the crowds and delve deeper into the artistic, historical <a href="http://www.blacktomato.com/country/morocco/"title="Morocco" >Morocco that’s captured our hearts.

Stunning coastlines and ancient medinas

Intense blue skies, the rolling waves of the Atlantic Ocean, and gleaming white architecture; it’s not called the blue and white city for nothing. History has certainly left its mark on Rabat, with monuments and towers reaching to the skies to honour national heroes dating back to the 7th century. Touch down in Casablanca, and transfer straight to Rabat, settle into your gorgeous Riad Kalaa, right in the heart of the old medina.

A smaller, calmer version of Casablanca, this city is packed with just as much charm; think elegant tree-lined boulevards, with a distinctive European feel and imposing architecture dominating the skyline. With a private guide at your side, wander the ancient medina and savour the heady aroma of spices whilst you browse for that must-have pair of leather slippers. Explore the sea front with its crumbling fortress walls as you gallop past on horseback, and enjoy the rest of the afternoon sitting back, relaxing with a flavoursome Moorish coffee while watching sail boats bob on the horizon. Make sure to stop off at the nearby town of Sale, renowned for its beautifully manicured gardens and sunsets over the Bou Regreg River. Simply breathtaking. For those looking for some adrenaline-inducing activities then grab your surf board and hit the waves at one of Morocco’s most infamous surf spots, pretty gnarly.

Step back in time in Fez

Next stop the imperial wonder of Fez for an intriguing mix of culture, history and smoking hot art. Shed the stereotypes of men in little red hats and experience the vibrant North African spirit alive and kicking in this city. Exploring Fez’s souks and its myriad of secret alleyways is like stepping back in time to medieval Morocco. Hole up for three nights at the timeless Dar Roumana and explore the streets by foot. With no cars allowed in the medina it’s the best way to get up close to this gorgeous city. A feast for the eyes, Fez is known for its array of colour. Around every corner seek out intricate mosaics, and towers in the rich green shades of Islam. Some of the most beautiful Moroccan ceramics come from this region; in a striking shade of cobalt blue, the signature style pottery is renowned throughout North Africa. For a picnic with a side helping of history head to the Volubilis Roman settlement dating back to the 3rd century, where you can lunch amongst imposing pillars and elaborate mosaics, all remarkably still intact. And end your day in true Roman style, with a splash of wine from the Domaine de la Zouina Vineyard, one of Morocco’s finest vineyard.

Our little secret: Chefchaouen

Following the splendour of Fez, journey into the rural landscape for some authentic Berber culture. Nestled away in the heart of the rugged Rif Mountains, Chefchaouen is a quaint town known for its spotless streets and beautiful blue washed buildings that illuminate the dramatic scenery against piercing blue skies. Imagine white cobbled stairways entwined with the twisted roots of ancient olive trees, an idyllic setting where the aromatic scents of Aragon oils and spices fill the air. Spend two nights at the Dar Gabriel, and really immerse yourself in the mountain way of life with an authentic Berber Hamman, trust us you’ll never feel cleaner. For some picture perfect views (just don’t forget your camera) visit the nearby Jabel National Reserve. Known for its serene beauty and impressive caves, the park is the perfect stop-off for those wanting to trek in the Rif Mountains and get a taste for the great Moroccan wilderness.

Take a different perspective on classic Morocco, and discover the magic of its relaxed Northern cities filled with culture and ancient history, backed up with some jaw dropping scenery, quite a trip we think.

luxury set in the heart of the oasis

This romantic, peaceful utopia can be found nestled between the swaying palms and desert landscapes in the heart of the wild frontiers of Southern <a href="http://www.blacktomato.com/country/morocco/"title="Morocco" >Morocco. With only 8 hand crafted bedrooms, intimacy and authenticity is at the heart of your experience. Les Jardins certainly lives up to its name, with acres of perfectly manicured gardens and farmland surrounding the property it’s the perfect place to unwind.

Location

This charming little hotel is located about 1.5 miles off the main road, set in the palm groves near the village of Skoura that stretch toward the High Atlas Mountains and in an area of fascinating abandoned kasbahs.

Your room

Les Jardins de Skoura has eight suites set in colourful gardens with vines, olive, apricot, pomegranate and fig trees in abundance perfect for lazing in the shade with a good book, also good if you’re feeling a bit peckish. Each suite is decorated in traditional Moroccan style with warm hues of burnt reds set against locally crafted furniture. Each room has its own bathroom and cosy log fires to keep you warm during the chilly Saharan nights.

Why we like it

Owner Carole Lecomte has seemingly blended luxury and calm with a friendly laid back ambiance. We adore the pool, which feels like you’re sitting in an Arabian Harem, fringed with olive trees and dotted with candles. The whole property boasts spectacular views over the Atlas Mountains, watch the sun go down on the terrace with chilled glass of wine in hand as the cool evening sets in. Find your company at the Jardins de Skoura Children with the in-house donkeys, dog, cats and turtles that grace the properties gardens.

fairytale castle in the desert

Retreat into the foothills of the Atlas Mountains and you’ll at once feel as though you’ve stepped into a lunar landscape, straight off a film set. The lovingly restored Kasbah Ellouze has been delicately designed to create a harmonious and relaxing atmosphere in the shadows of jagged mountains and the hostile desert surroundings. Effortlessly chic interiors, unobtrusive staff serving wholesome Moroccan dishes, surrounded by the best scenery <a href="http://www.blacktomato.com/country/morocco/"title="Morocco" >Morocco has to offer, epitomise this magical getaway.

Location

If you’re after authentic rustic remoteness, look no further. Based in the foothills of the Atlas Mountains, this Kasbah really does make you feel like you’re in the heartland of the moroccan countryside. A unique charm that makes Kasbah Ellouze so endearing is that it’s placed right in the hub of a small, quaint traditional village. Wake up to the relaxing lull of Moroccan life and immerse yourself in the village life as you head out of your hotel for an afternoon stroll. For a rather more adventurous experience take a camel ride along the shimmering rivers that twist through this landscape.

Your room

Simple, authentic style is the theme running throughout this ten bedroom property. Each room looks out onto the stunning gardens of almond, pomegranate, apricot and olive groves set against the backdrop of the distant snow capped mountains. Locally inspired decor complimented with key Moroccan colouring – azure blue, terracotta red and earthy brown – are used throughout the rooms and small touches, such as local arts and crafts dotted throughout, set this Kasbah apart from the rest. Crisp, clean, locally embroidered linen and wooden terraces opening out of some of the rooms make you feel as though you’re in your own magical Arabian castle.

Why we like it

As the sun slowly peeks over the crest of the Atlas Mountains there really is only one way to fully appreciate the spectacular surrounding scenery – by air. A once in a lifetime organised trip in a hot air balloon trip, at sunrise across this extraordinary arid landscape, is an experience we can’t recommend enough.

Coupled with the resident camels that make frequent appearances, wandering around the luscious emerald gardens or peering over the terracotta Kasbah walls, the Kasbah Ellouze fuses two essential aspects of a hotel experience that here at Black tomato we look for – unique and one to remember for a life time.

journey the sand dunes of morocco

Calling all adventurous spirits, it’s time to discover the rugged frontier of Southern <a href="http://www.blacktomato.com/country/morocco/"title="Morocco" >Morocco on your own exhilarating North African escapade. Voyage into the remote highlands of the Atlas Mountains, uncover ancient Kasbahs, and discover the nomadic way of life as the mountains merge into the periphery of the mighty Sahara Desert. This is a desert adventure that takes you further than sitting on a camel on a sand dune.

Romance in Marrakech

Start your trip in Marrakech, a city sure to capture the hearts of anyone who passes through. Known for its vibrant buildings in hues of red, ochre, and pink, Marrakech is a sure fire sensory overload. As soon as you touch town you’ll feel the balmy heat caress your skin and the exotic smell of spices fill the air. Hole up in the exclusive Riad Farnatchi right in the middle of all the action. Spend your day in the medina and lose yourself in the labyrinth of alleyways, where the call of the souk traders will tempt you with decorative delights and leather goods. For the best views in the city take to dizzying heights in a hot air balloon, reaching out to the foothills of the Atlas Mountains and the beginnings of the Sahara. If heights aren’t your thing, then panic not, why not take a lesson in the art of Moroccan gastronomy. Whip up some mouth-watering Tagines packed with tender meats and exotic delicious spices. Recipes guaranteed to make you the toast of all dinner parties back home.

Rock the kasbah in the mountains

Today you’ll escape the buzzing atmosphere of the city and really get away from it all. Get ready to experience the great outdoors. Onboard your private 4×4, roll through the mountain passes and into the regions of the deep south. Sit back, relax, and marvel at the jaw dropping rock formations and steep valleys dotted with waterfalls as they pass you by. Over the next two days you’ll voyage over the Col de Tichka which stands tall at 7,000ft. Uncover crumbling Kasbahs of centuries old in the countryside village of Telouet before tucking into a typical rustic meal sat at low tables in a Saharan nomad tent. Continue south towards the village of Tamdaght, where you’ll find your accommodation Kasbah Ellouze. Cool down after a long day’s hike with a dip in the pool, overlooking sun kissed orchards and palm groves.

Desert daze

If you fancy getting some adrenaline pumping, spend your morning exploring the grounds by mountain bike, the trails wind through the mountainside allowing for spectacular views of the valley. Then set from the cool lofty heights of the mountains and head down to the desert. Here you’ll stay at Les Jardins de Soukra an inviting boutique guest house nestled deep in the Soukra palms. Head further into the expanse of the Sahara towards the desert dunes of Merzouga where your stop-over for the night is a cosy auberge in the “Hamada” stone desert. Explore the magnificent desert landscape of the Erg Chebbi Dunes, the highest sand dunes in Morocco by the one and only way, camel of course. These ships of the desert may not be as quick as the 4×4 but trust us there’s nothing like traversing across the wild African desert, just you and your trusty stead. Find the perfect spot to set up camp under the night sky, for some of the best star gazing in the world; it doesn’t get more remote than this.

Find peace of mind in the oasis

And finally, discover the desolate beauty of the Draa Valley. This volcanic landscape conjures up unearthly images, if not for the odd oasis and plams you’d think you’d landed on the moon. Think anvil shaped mountains set against piercing blue skies. The region is virtually uninhabited, the only sign of life is the crumbling Kasbahs scattered on the horizon. On your return journey home, side step Marrakech and head to the Palmerie known as the City’s lush garden for a touch of pampering and luxury. The Jnane Oasis retreat can only be described as perfect serenity and comfort hidden amongst a myriad of palm trees, a Utopian paradise found.

Capture the spirit of the Moroccan mountains and truly escape from it all, on this adventure brimming with new lands shrouded with African mystery.

under the desert sky in morocco

Surrounded by rolling sand dunes, deep canyons and a desert of wonderful silence, the Atta Saharan Camp is a unique desert camping experience. With just 10 tented suites, this environmentally friendly eco camp has combined the ancient architectural techniques of the Berbers with modern comfort and luxury. There are plenty of desert-based activities in the area. After enjoying a delicious Moroccan tagine in the spacious, luxurious communal tent, you must sit out in the desert: you will never have felt so close to the stars.

Location

Deep in the heart of the Ait Alla tribe territory in the famous Sahara desert, southern <a href="http://www.blacktomato.com/country/morocco/"title="Morocco" >Morocco Atta Saharan Camp is 6 hours drive from the town of Ouarzazate. Sublimely beautiful, this is the desert at its best.

Your room

Each of the tented suites is spacious and comfortable with thick canvas walls, colourful rugs covering the floors, and huge beds. The tents are lit by decorative Moroccan style lamps giving them a warm, magical ambience. Snuggle up beneath thick bed covers and bright blankets on chilly desert nights, or lounge on natural rattan chairs and enjoy the tranquillity. There is a separate bathroom and shower tent, set apart from the main camping area, which provides fully modern amenities, including hot water.

Why we like it

We love rummaging through the big chest library in the lounge and heading off to our suite to curl up on the big beds with a book about traditional Berber cultures and tribes.

<a href="http://www.blacktomato.com/country/morocco/"title="Morocco" >Morocco has so much to offer that it’s hard to know where to start but let us help you. From Marrakech’s buzzing madcap Djemaa El Fna and cosmopolitan café scene; to Essaouira’s sweeping coastline and Fez’s charmingly authentic artisan wares and medieval architecture; to the breathtaking grandeur of the Atlas Mountains – this is North Africa’s most colourful jewel. Whether it’s hiking, shopping, surfing, skiing (yes, really), or even just doing nothing but observing the locals over a cup of hot mint tea, Morocco has it all.

At a glance

It’s only a short trip from Europe but, culturally speaking, Morocco is a world away. And, in the winding alleys of the souks of Marrakech and Fez, you’d swear that you had gone back in time, too. The sights and sounds (and smells) of Africa come alive in a high definition, techni-colour assault on the senses. The ancient imperial cities have more than enough surprises up their sleeves to entertain and bewitch you – whether it’s your first trip, or your fortieth. Meanwhile, life at the seaside port town of Essaouira is all whitewashed dazzle in comparison to the interior’s earthen hues – and it moves at a gentler place, perfect for a chill out sojourn on your North African adventure. Then, for a completely different cultural experience, you can visit the Atlas Mountains. There, you’ll get acquainted with the local Berber tribes and their simple way of life, far from modern life’s trappings. The mountain range is North Africa’s largest – stretching through Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia – and is heaven for trekking and nature fans.

What to see

You can’t go to Marrakech and avoid the Djemaa El Fna. And why would you want to? There are snake charmers, orange juice and water sellers, vendors of kohl (for the authentic Moroccan smokey eye look), stray kittens, story tellers, strange noises and, after dark, the square turns into a massive open-air restaurant with local cafes setting up stalls to hawk their morsels. It has to be done. Morocco’s cuisine is deliciously fragrant and exotic, a tagine in one of Marrakech’s many impressive restaurants (we especially love Le Tobsil for its romance and authenticity) should almost be a rite of passage. Fall in love with Morocco’s other imperial city, Fez. Less anarchic than Marrakech, Fez is the country’s artistic heartland and its UNESCO-protected medina is the largest living Islamic medieval city in the world. On the Atlantic coast, Essaouira’s piratical charm and wind-swept beaches (perfect for wind- and kite-surfing) are a magnet for outdoorsy sorts. Essaouira has a reputation as ‘the Woodstock of Morocco’, so if cultural pursuits are more your things, then make sure you’re in town in June for the Gnaoua Festival of World Music. Venture up into the Atlas Mountains to experience Morocco’s majestic landscape on treks through cedar forests, past rivers and waterfalls and cool down in crystal clear natural pools. Not up to the hike? Jump on the local transport instead: a mule and prepare to be transported into Berber heartland.

Why we love it

The colours. The sounds. Even the smells make Morocco a complete contrast to the ordered politeness that we’re used to – and that’s what makes it magical. From the enchanting mayhem of the souk’s spice markets and the melodic call of the muezzin, to dramatic mountain ranges and sweeping coastlines – Morocco has something to spellbind us all.

Whether it’s your first time to <a href="http://www.blacktomato.com/country/morocco/"title="Morocco" >Morocco or you simply can’t get enough, this is the classic Moroccan adventure with a Black Tomato twist. On this whirlwind experience hit up the hustle and bustle of Marrakech delving deep into its labyrinth of souks and alley ways with a private guide before heading up the Atlas Mountains to cool off and take in the expansive views. And of course no trip to Morocco would be complete without exploring the dunes of the Sahara with a bonfire feast and camp under the stars.

Medina madness

Start off at the Berber-lux La Maison Arabe in the heart of Marrakech’s medina, nestled in narrow streets with high clay walls. Settle in and enjoy the two swimming pools, complimentary breakfast (homemade Moroccan pancakes, anyone?) and fresh mint tea before hitting the streets. After a horse and carriage tour of the city, our local guides will show you the hidden parts of the souks which most visitors miss. Visit the wool-dyers and leather-makers, and hear the clink-clink of the metalworkers’ tools as they hand-make decorative lamps, plates and bowls.

Haggle for anything from jewellery to hand-carved wooden trinkets, herbs and spices, shoes, leather bags and belts. Our guide will show you the best quality shops and give you insight into the fascinating sights, for a real under-the-skin experience.

Up to the mountains and down to the desert

Now it’s time to escape the city and head into the High Atlas Mountains for a breath of fresh air. Enjoy spectacular mountain views before bedding down for the night in the charming Kasbah Tamadot.

After the lofty heights of the mountains, travel down to the famous Sahara desert. Drive over towering sand dunes in a 4×4 and see nothing but sand and blue skies. No buildings, no people, just total silence. Sleep in a simple yet cosy tented camp at the eco friendly Atta Saharan Cam (think proper beds and meals cooked for you the traditional Berber way) and ride camels through the sand. At night, dine on slow-cooked tagine by the bonfire, and fall asleep to deep silence under the brightest stars you are ever likely to see.

Hollywood and mint tea

Spend the next day interacting with Nomadic tribes, learning their customs and immersing yourself in the magic of the desert before heading back to the ‘civilisation’ of Ouarzazate. Known as the ‘doorway to the desert’, Ouarzazate was made famous by films such as Gladiator and Kingdom of Heaven; you will even have a unique opportunity to visit the studios. Head to see the spectacular Kasbah Taourirt, and lose yourself in the winding alleys and exotic markets.

Valley of the fruits

Finally, before heading back to the bustle of Marrakech, you will visit the beautiful landscape of the Ouirgane Valley, where you can take a walk, try horse riding or explore the surrounding villages. Take mint tea with the Berbers, eat fresh fruit and try some of the local speciality foods. You will be staying in La Roseraie, so if you just fancy relaxing all afternoon, take advantage of the 3 swimming pools or enjoy a massage in the hammam to prepare you for the bustle of Marrakech and some last-minute shopping before you fly home.
