Amanyangyun

Away from the bustle of Shanghai’s iconic Bund District, Amanyangyun offers a peaceful sanctuary surrounded by a sacred forest of camphor trees. Bringing to life the splendour of the Ming and Qing dynasties, 37 luxurious dwellings have been rebuilt, brick by ancient brick, to create a place where beauty and tradition rest in harmony with unspoilt nature. Translating to mean ‘nourishing cloud’, Amanyangyun is just that. Five restaurants in which to nourish your body and a signature Aman Spa in which to nourish your soul, a stay here will leave you on cloud nine.

Location

45 minutes but a world away from metropolitan Shanghai and the International Airport at Hongqiao, Amanyangyun takes you out of the city and transports you into a stunning natural world. Speckled with lotus ponds, carved by water terraces and framed by thick bamboo forest, take a stroll through the camphor forest before exploring further afield with a trip to the traditional canal town of Zhujiajiao.

Your Room

Opening up onto tranquil courtyards and with views of the forest glimpsed through latticed screens, each of the 37 suites, pavilions and villas at Amanyangyun form your own private sanctuary. Here, muted colour schemes, clean lines and natural materials fuse together to create an elegant space complete with king-sized beds, sumptuous living spaces and stunning bathrooms. We especially loved the Antique Pavilions with their traditional accents and private gardens and swimming pools. Whilst, if you’re travelling with the family, the Four Bedroom Antique Villas have something for everyone.

Why we like it

Amanyangyun is so much more than a stunning hotel, it is a story and an insight into Chinese heritage. Years in the making, it represents the culmination of monumental architectural and ecological conservation efforts, with ancient dwellings rebuilt from the ground up and an endangered forest, saved from extinction, and transported over 700km to its new home in Amanyangyun’s backyard. This is a place to experience China in all its dynastic splendour, with gourmet delicacies inspired by Jiangxi cuisine prepared at LAHZU Restaurant, spa treatments infused with traditional Chinese medicine in the Spa and calligraphy classes and incense ceremonies hosted at Nan Shufang, a breathtaking replica of the Royal Reading Pavilion in Beijing’s Forbidden City.
