Ecuador & the Galapagos

Casa Gangotena, Quito

Casa Gangotena in the heart of Quito resembles a Renaissance palace and overlooks the gorgeous cobbled square of Plaza San Francisco. This newly restored historic mansion is host to 31 rooms decorated in a style that mixes Ecuadorian antiquity with contemporary sophistication. It’s the perfect spot for those who want to simply sit back and watch the world go by or for those determined to explore the world heritage wonders of Quito.

Location

Set in Quito’s Old Town this hotel holds a special place in Ecuador’s history. According to early Spanish writings the plaza dates back to the 15th Century and an ancient Inca Temple is thought to have sat in the corner of the square where the Casa Gangotena now does. From Quito airport it will take you just under an hour to reach this beautiful significant residence. Walking distance away are some of the city’s most spectacular sights, including the San Francisco Church and the Basilica.

Your room

The Casa Gangotena has a wide range of rooms and suites that will definitely make your trip to Quito unforgettable. Think rich carpets, art deco furniture and high ceilings with towering window panes that draw in the bright Andean sunshine. We especially love the Plaza View Rooms that look out onto the Plaza San Francisco through huge French windows, making you feel close to the buzz of the city at all hours.

Why we like it?

Not only is the hotel a historic gem but it’s working to maintain and preserve the tradition of the city as well. It uses sustainable and eco-friendly solar panels for energy and all the produce in its restaurant is locally sourced. On the subject of food, Casa Gangotena’s traditional afternoon tea is not to be missed. Sample the ‘Agua de Frescos’, a tea that originates from the southern highlands made from herbs, leaves and flower petals said to energize you. You’ll be feeling like a Quiteno in no time.
