Lost for where to start with your honeymoon planning? Well, we are offering a slightly different approach to your typical honeymoon, with the notion that two destinations are better than one. So we’ve paired two of the African continent’s most contrasting destinations; intrepid Rwanda and the idyllic island of Mauritius, to create this unusual luxury holiday with the perfect blend of adventure and relaxation. We’ll whisk you off to the volcanic peaks of Rwanda in search of mighty mountain gorillas, then fly south to the beautiful island of Mauritius for some beach downtime at the exclusive Oberoi Resort. Sold? We thought so.
GORILLAS IN THE MIST
Touch down in Rwanda and we’ll transfer you to the Parc National des Volcans and the luxurious Virunga Lodge. A country with a turbulent past, Rwanda is now regarded as a wildlife mecca with a third of the planet’s remaining mountain gorillas found in the country’s northern region. Whether you choose to take the high road or fly via helicopter over the impressive mountain scenery to get to Virunga Lodge, the views from this remote eco-retreat are truly awe-inspiring. The Virunga mountain chain consists of eight almost perfectly-peaked volcanoes that extend along the northernmost border into Uganda. This is your basecamp for the next four nights, as you venture out into the surrounding jungle to track endangered gorilla families. You’ll trek through the light mountain forest, with an early start to make the most of your time, and get up-close and personal with the apes by lunchtime. Just remember to charge the camera the night before, this is an album you won’t want to miss out on. Once you’ve pried yourself away, you’ll be back in time for a late afternoon meal at the lodge and a chance to enjoy the peaceful surroundings.Read more
Once you’ve made the most of viewing the incredible primates in the wild, you can explore the Parc National des Volcans further: by visiting the golden monkeys or climbing the Visoke volcano. For those inspired by the gorilla tracking, you can also make the short trek to Dian Fossey’s (the famous researcher depicted in ‘Gorillas in the Mist’) grave. After exploring all this fascinating corner of Rwanda, you can make the most of the romantic and secluded setting with a complimentary massage followed by a candle-lit dinner overlooking the dramatic volcanic landscape.
VOLCANOES TO ISLAND LIFE
From the highlands of Central Africa to the crystal clear waters of the Indian Ocean, you’ll finish your honeymoon in serious style on the island Mauritius. After the busy build-up to the wedding The Oberoi Mauritius is the perfect setting to unwind and make the most of the stunning beaches and gorgeous sunsets which the island is known for. Nestled in 20 acres of beautiful sub-tropical gardens, here you can do as much or as little as you like. Hole up in one of the luxurious private villas where you can while away your days dipping in and out of your private plunge pool before heading to the spa to indulge in a few traditional Mauritian treatments. For those looking to expel a little bit more energy, you can take to the beach for a private yoga session, or for night owls we can organise a stargazing lesson under the star-flecked sky. The perfect way to end your unusual African adventure.
