Kulala Desert Lodge

Kulala Desert Lodge is a safari camp with a difference. Nestled in the rolling red dunes of Sossusvlei in the heart of the Namib Desert, this is the closest you can stay to the iconic amber hills, providing you with unparalleled access to the dramatic Namib scenery and spectacular views of the sunset. Watch African wildlife frolic in the midst of glowing sand mountains and endless desert plains as you explore Kulala Wilderness Reserve by quad bike, hot air balloon, nature drive or on foot. With only 23 thatched ‘kulalas’ in the magnificent camp, the Lodge is the ultimate luxury retreat, the only disturbance to your tranquillity being the calls of springboks, ostrich and jackals from the nearby watering hole.

Location

Located within the arid Namib Desert on the 37,000-hectare private Kulala Wilderness Reserve on the border of Naukluft Park, the feeling at Kulala Desert Lodge is one of complete tranquillity. You may be in the middle of the desert, but the lodge is easily accessible by one hour flight from Windhoek airport, with the tiny airstrip only 30 minutes drive from the camp. Alternatively, take the scenic route and explore Namibia with a five-hour drive through the stunning African landscape from Windhoek airport.

Your Room

With just 23 thatched and canvas ‘kulalas’ purpose-built on wooden platforms to catch the cooling desert breeze and completed with rooftop decks for starlit sleepovers, it is clear that Kulala Desert Lodge is no ordinary safari experience. With larger tents to accommodate families and a beautifully furnished communal area with a cosy lounge, cooling plunge pool and wrap-around veranda overlooking the riverbed, Kulala is a ruby in the rose-gold Namib wilderness.

Why We Like It

If you think you’ve ‘done’ a safari, think again. Nowhere else in the world can you experience African wildlife in the shadow of the glowing sand dunes of Sossusvlei, with the haunting beauty of the dried up Dead Vlei (claypan) surrounded by the ghostly skeletons of desert trees. Explore the dramatic Sesriem Canyon, horse ride over sandy plains, take a stroll at sunrise or enjoy a refreshing gin and tonic on your private veranda. Whatever you choose, the memories you make are sure to last longer than the sinking golden sun.
