Grande Denali Lodge

Exhausted after your adventure-packed day in Alaska’s big, wild and beautiful Denali National Park? What better place to rest your head than the haven at the park’s entrance: the Grande Denali Lodge. As the name suggests, the hotel is an expansive timber-built lodge, harmoniously situated amongst the rugged and breathtakingly beautiful scenery of Denali national park. Adjacent to the lodge’s 170 guest rooms you’ll find one of its six modern guest cabins – the perfect place to base yourself as you prepare for the adrenaline-fuelled trip Alaska is renowned for.

Location

Perched on the slopes of Sugarloaf Mountain, the Grande Denali Lodge is a veritable oasis in the wintry Alaskan terrain. Higher than the majority of hotels in the area, this place is a rare treat, offering crisp mountain air, and unparalleled views over the Nenana River Canyon and the surrounding Denali wilderness. The grandeur of this epic location easily make the five-hour drive from Anchorage worthwhile, but to make the most of the journey, book yourself into deluxe dome car seating on the Alaska railroad Denali Star Train. This flagship locomotive takes you through the most impressive array of scenery this country has to offer, from icy streams to verdant forests and all the wildlife in between.

Your room

Relax and recharge at your own pace with the Grande Denali Lodge’s 170 spacious guest rooms, located in the Kodiak and Denali Lodges, next to the hotel’s main lodge buildings. With all the amenities you’d expect in each room, the only thing you need to ensure is getting the one with the best view. For a more private, secluded feel, we’d recommend one of the hotel’s six guest cabins. Each cabin sleeps four, and alongside luxurious living areas, the most enticing attraction is their ‘wilderness viewing decks’ – that’s a deck chair-laden terrace to you and me. Enjoy a crisp glass of wine as you survey the Alaskan panorama below you, and debate which summit to mount tomorrow.

Why we love it

The huge timber-framed lobby of the lodge is a focal hub of the hotel, with vaulted ceilings, large windows and stone fireplaces, and is the perfect place for a warming hot chocolate after your active day. The Alpenglow restaurant also has the panoramic views common to the rest of the hotel, and a classic Alaskan offering to delight your tastebuds. Rest assured your hard work during the day will be heartily rewarded with the restaurant’s eclectic cuisine and fine wines, surrounded by trees and one of mother nature’s most perfect canvases.
