Step into a world where the sky is painted a different shade each day and the amphitheatre of mountains in the distance offer a dramatic scenic backdrop to the wide open plains. The diverse landscape of Samara includes four of South Africa’s seven biomes: Grassland, Nama Karoo, Thicket and Savannah. Home to some of the finest game, thanks to the reintroduction of endangered species wild cheetah, white rhino and mountain zebra, are some of the many magnificent animals to be found parading around this outstanding landscape. At the end of the day, Karoo Lodge greets you with a warm welcome home, a hearty meal and offers a taste of the colonial lifestyle and traditions as the farmers lived back then.
Nestled in two acres of tranquil gardens in the Samara, Karoo Lodge is dwarfed by the awesome Samara landscape that encompasses 28,000 hectares of land that stretches from the dramatic mountains of the Karoo to the magnificent plains of Camdeboo. Only 3 hours drive from Port Elizabeth, Karoo Lodge seems a world away as you step into one of the most outstanding game experiences in an East African style.
The Karoo Lodge is comprised of three luxury lodge suites within the main lodge that open out onto the spacious covered patio surrounding the home with glorious mountain views and seven individual Karoo suites all with private patios. Each of the spacious rooms are stylishly decorated in traditional African colours, with bathrooms offering large corners baths and showers, which have beautiful floors adorned with river pebbles from the area.
Why we like it
We always appreciate when we can go to a place and feel at home. The wonderfully hospitable hosts always have a piece of added insight into the surrounding countryside to offer, and stories of times gone by. We particularly love those nights gazing at stars that feel so close we could touch them.
