Drawn by the bright lights, I moved from Yorkshire to London to work in finance. Before long, I packed in the city life and headed off to explore Southeast Asia. Between marching through jungles in search of the endangered Sumatran orangutan and strolling Hanoi’s busy French quarter, it became clear that my heart was firmly set on travel.
As a Travel Expert at Black Tomato, I’ve been on countless trips back to Southeast Asia and have also gotten to know Iceland like the back of my hand – from the enormous expanse of Langjokull Glacier to the black-red rocks of Hljóðaklettar. Being able to share this with our travelers is the very best part of my job.
But it’d be wrong – or at least reductive – to say that this job is about simply ‘giving’ you the world. First things first, it’s about learning what makes you tick, and then matching you with a place, and with people, who can realize your dreams. We take a thoughtful approach to really listening to what you want and need. Only then does the world – as vast and beautiful as it is – come into play.

A closer look at IndonesiaOne of my most memorable dining experiences was dining at the house of a local family in Java, Indonesia. The Bilals, my hosts for the night, were coconut sugar farmers and they prepared a lavish, traditional feast in their own kitchen. We ate, laughed, and chatted by candlelight, getting to grips with a delicious array of Indonesian plates – from sweet nasi goreng (fried rice with soy sauce and acar) and gado gado (salad with peanut dressing) to traditional soto (meat soup). It was a night – and a meal – to remember.
