Dunton Hot Springs, Colorado

Normally we hate contradictions. But this bolthole of self-confessed contradictions has changed our minds. Hand-hewn log cabins with exquisite furnishings, torturing hikes followed by muscle easing massages, a tranquil sanctuary with heart-stopping adventures. Historically Dunton was a small mining town with a population of only 200 at its peak and it has not lost any of its colonial charm. It has a Saloon, library and outdoor chapel as well as natural hot springs throughout. As far as luxury hotels in Colorado go, it doesn’t get much better than Dunton Hot Springs.

Location

The remote town is located in the south-west of Colorado burrowed deep into the San Juan Mountains, meaning that your time at Dunton Hot Springs leaves you feeling truly at one with nature. A self-drive journey is recommended so you have complete freedom to explore the awe-inspiring surroundings, but the staff are happy to arrange a collection from Durango, Telluride, Cortez and Montrose Airports.

Your room

All the hand-hewn cabins are authentically restored, some by the original miners themselves, making it feel like you are transported back to 1905 at the height of the mining industry. Another contradiction we love is that the authentically historical rooms are equipped with high-speed internet although the town is mobile phone free. The thought that has gone into the detailed decoration is meticulous and each cabin has its own personality, from vintage Wild West movie posters to a canvas roof or an outside shower.

Why we like it

What’s not to like? The Saloon has its original bar with the carvings from Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, the library has many times been described as a place to lose yourself and is both beautiful and well-stocked. You feel at one with nature as well as luxuriously pampered, with natural hot springs and spa on site. You can get as involved as you like, helping the chef prepare locally sourced meals, horseback riding through the mountains or take a photography or fine art workshop. They even have their own vineyard in the McElmo Valley.
