Road trip the Washington way

Touch down in the Evergreen State to begin an open-road adventure that takes in a sprig of city spice with a healthy helping of awe-inspiring natural adventure. Discover snow-capped volcanic peaks and rolling hills carpeted in thick, lush forest, alongside the hip urban swing of Seattle, fizzing with cosmopolitan culture and think-different innovations (something to do with the coffee we think).

start your engines

For any adventure in the Pacific North-Western USA, all roads start in Seattle. Stay at the Inn at the Market, our chic waterfront bolt hole, right by the exciting Pike Place market. We’ll furnish you with your own set of All-American wheels to take to the tarmac for the classic American road trip.

Once you’ve bonged out the elevator at the top of the Space Needle and filled your camera roll with the shots of skyscrapers and snowy mountains in the distance, duck inside for a sip of Seattle’s most famous export – no one does coffee quite like the Seattleites. Full of beans, it’s time to visit Pike Place food market, right by your front door, where fresh treats from around the world congregate to create an eclectic mix of exciting and exotic offerings, from fish and chips to German sausage and freshly whipped gelato.

cloud breakers

West of Seattle, the Olympic National Park is ripe for any explorer with a bristling mix of rain forest valleys and glacier-capped peaks breaking through the clouds. We’ll arrange for you to stay at Sea Cliff Gardens in Port Angeles where you’ll be surrounded by colourful and fragrant wild flowers. Keeping in tune with the spectacular scenery, move on to Mount Rainier National Park, an inspiring expanse of subalpine ecology and wildlife with mountains shrouded in wispy commutes of wandering clouds and glaciers cracking under the pressure of millions of years of ice. Trek over green hills and witness sights straight out of a picture book, with only the sounds of nature for company.

wine time

Being so close to the Yakima Wine Valley, it would be a crime to miss out on the chilled serenity of this region (and the wine, of course) so stop off and begin discovering all of Yakima’s delicious tipples. Most wineries in this region are boutique, family-run operations so hop between wineries as you cross this sun-kissed region, sampling all the distinct flavours and varieties.

Snooze off the wine and peek at the sceneries of Winthrop and Anacortes, perfect for outdoor pursuits like boating, hiking and biking. The Old West is still on show in Winthrop with its wooden sidewalks and old-style saloons blending seamlessly with the culture cove of Anacortes’s fine dining restaurants, art galleries and boutique waterfront shops.

game day

For one last chance to bring out the outdoorsman in you, Snoqualmie, snuggled between Washington’s picturesque forests, rivers and mountains, is the place to do it. We can organise a guide to take you hunting for classic American big game like deer and elk and all manner of smaller game and water fowl. Or if you prefer to fish, Snoqualmie’s pristine waters are great for fly-fishing or catching trout, sturgeon, salmon and halibut, as well as delicious shell fish and spiky rockfish. Snoqualmie Falls is well worth a visit too (1.5million visitors a year can’t be wrong), with its thundering stream of pure water crashing 270ft into the rock pool below. Make sure to also leave time to climb the most-climbed peak in USA, Mount Si. Hike the four miles to the summit and draw breath to take in the astounding views over the Puget Sound and Olympic Mountains. For an alternative, quaint wilderness experience, hop on the antique train to the railway museum and fill your knowledge pot with everything locomotive.

private skies

For the last day of your epic Washington adventure, return to the culture hub of Seattle where we can organise a romantic scenic flight over the city, taking in the brilliant views of Ballard Locks, the Space Needle, Seattle’s downtown skyscrapers and even Bill Gates’ Estate. We can arrange for you to be flown to a private location on one of the surrounding islands for an intimate candle-lit dinner to round off your epic Washington adventure in fitting Black Tomato style.
