Fancy an artistic low down on how to turn those creative ideas of yours into works of art? Well, Aragorn Dick-Read is here to help you do just that, with a Caribbean twist of course, and this short video is definitely worth a watch. This man is quite the globe-trotter, having absorbed cultures from Russia, South and Central America, Australia and Southern Africa, travels that have broadened both his mind and his artistic ideas. His European training has allowed him to discover how to bring to life his artistic visions and his subsequent sculptures are truly beautiful.
Although dabbling over the years in as many different mediums as cultures, its the sculpting of metal that Aragorn has perfected. Ironically, it ‘s through metal, thought of as hard and unyielding, that Aragorn incorporates his flowing and relaxed design style. Using light or fire, he transforms his fascinating works of art from static pieces to performance pieces. He’s sculpted cubes, pyramids and spheres that with fire, evolve into a spectacle.
As well as being an inspired individual, Aragorn’s out there to inspire, too. In Trellis Bay Village, British Virgin Islands, the local art centre displays his works and teaches craft skills to all visitors. Completely dedicated, in 1997 Aragorn was also part of the Gli Gli Carib Canoe project where a traditional Caribbean canoe was built and sailed all the way from Dominica to Guyana. If that’s not enough to impress, maybe the fact that he’s the co-founder of the Caribbean Artisan Network too, is.
No doubt inspired by the natural beauty of his home on the island of Tortola in the British Virgin Islands, his works are based on bold tribal silhouettes and the natural wonders of the Caribbean. Having held exhibitions in both London and New York, his work has been appreciated across international platforms. Yep, this is one seriously talented guy…
