Sacramento: California’s capital, the “city of trees’, a hidden gem all too often missed off the list on California road-trips. But trust us, travelling around the Golden State is not the same without a stop off in this authentic, buzzy city. It sits an hour and a half east of San Francisco but feels a world away from usual the tourist trail.
Sacramento won a place in our hearts the moment we arrived to capture it on film for our California Live project. The streets were wide and leafy (hence its affectionate nickname), the people friendly, the bars and restaurants quirky and exciting. There was a lot to discover about this place, and one of our favourite spots for quenching thirst after a day of exploring was the hip Hook and Ladder; a spacious and contemporary manufacturing themed bar with an endless list of artisan cocktails. We were big fans, which is why we’re particularly excited by their latest opening.
Bottle and Barlow is a curious new concept created by the same team of innovative bar tenders, but this project is a collaboration with Jason Dunn from the renowned Anthony’s barbershop – and it’s really got the Sacramento hipsters talking. The result? A barbershop bar, essentially. Think old-fashioned barbershop culture with the classic bar atmosphere. There will be various cocktails on the list, as well as off-menu mixologists at the ready, so you can treat yourself to some world class grooming while sipping on a carefully crafted drink. The modern-day dandy will be in his element.
But this is not just about indulging yourself for an hour of grooming, Old-Fashioned in hand, it’s experiencing something that speaks volumes about the experimental ethos and creativity of this city. Home to state buildings it may be, but this is the true taste of California’s capital.
