Across Canada, unique and home-grown produce can be enjoyed throughout the seasons. And in celebration of this bounty, there are a huge number of foodie festivals littering the Canadian events calendar. From corn to prawn, here are just a handful of our favourites…
Launching of the Boats,Quebec, April
Let the lobster season commence. This is the basic idea behind this quirky seaside town’s annual festival. For crustacean lovers this is a must visit spectacle. Lobster fishermen take to the high seas to tow in the perfect catch. Marvel at the amazing fireworks that light up the night sky, and of course appreciate the fishermen’s hard work and enjoy a hearty lobster dinner. Delicious.
Spot Prawn Festival, British Columbia, May
The Spot Prawn Festival is a celebration of all things, you’ve guessed it, Spot Prawn, a crustacean native to BC’s coastal waters. In May each year, Fisherman’s Wharf becomes overrun with cooking demonstrations, celebrity chefs and classes. The aim of the festival is to spread the word about this sustainable creature, and all of the flavours you can create with it without harming the environment. BC wines and beers are available to wash it all down with too. Perfect.
A Taste of Edmonton, Alberta, July
A Taste of Edmonton is one of the oldest and best-loved festivals in Alberta. Each year, musicians, chefs and restaurateurs come together to celebrate food, flavours and local produce. The quality of vendors here is extraordinary, so its no surprise over 500,000 people attend each year. This time, we recommend you join the crowds. They know what they’re doing.
Niagara Wine Festival, Ontario, September
The number one wine festival in the province of Ontario, the Niagara Wine Festival makes for the perfect seasonal pit stop en route to the Niagara Falls. Wine tastings and wine and food pairing seminars are ready and waiting to wet your palette and leave you with a knowledge rivalling a wine connoisseur. Whistle stop or ‘full Monty’ tours are available, which include up to eight winery experiences. Don’t mind if we do.
Roots, Rants & Roars Festival, Newfoundland, September
This unique festival held in the stunning setting of Elliston is one that focuses on good food, wonderful chefs and reconnecting locals and visitors alike to the land and the sea. It’s earthy, it’s organic and it’s fast becoming one of the best events in Canada to come face to face with exquisite dishes and emerging talent. Any excuse to visit Newfoundland.
