Sophie Green’s story

We caught up with Sophie Green, who co-founded Greenhouse Juice Co. in Toronto, to find out where she finds inspiration.

TELL US A BIT ABOUT WHAT YOU DO AND WHY?

I am a co-founder of Greenhouse Juice Co., a company that was developed and created by a like-minded team – myself, my brother, his two best friends and their wives. We were searching for a simple and delicious way to integrate plant-based health into people’s lives. We were frustrated with the lack of options in Toronto, and wanted to offer delicious juices and smoothies without compromising quality. That meant 100% organic fruit and vegetables, glass bottle packaging, and environmental responsibility.

TALK US THROUGH A TYPICAL WORKING DAY FOR YOU?

Because I live between New York and Toronto, my workdays vary. If I am in Toronto, I am at our shop on MacPherson, greeting customers, tasting juice, and assisting my brother in identifying new locations, store design, and overseeing operations. If I am in New York, I am teaching yoga, working with children, and doing research.

HOW DO PLACES ACROSS THE GLOBE INFLUENCE YOUR WORK?

I look for inspiration everywhere. Juice bars have been popularized in other cities like Los Angeles, New York City, and Miami, but I have always loved experiencing juice in less formal environments like delicious sweet sap in Jamaica, fresh orange juice for breakfast in Marrakesh, and my favorite, mango juice in India. We dream up new juices based on seasonal ingredients and what our customers want. We are proud to be able to offer a beautiful range of juices using the cold-pressed method, which is the healthiest way to make juice. Hydraulic pressure is used to extract juice from plants without exposing them to high levels of heat or oxygen.

IS TRAVEL IMPORTANT TO YOU PERSONALLY?

Travel has always played an integral part in my life. I was fortunate enough to grow up with parents who truly believe that the most important life lessons come from seeing and experiencing different parts of the world (instead of solely learning within a classroom). I have always possessed a strong passion for traveling and wanting to learn about other cultures and what other parts of the world have to offer. I feel my most invigorated and inspired self when I am traveling—eyes wide open taking in and digesting all of the new sites, smells, and sounds. Traveling can feel very free— being in a foreign place, detached from all that is familiar and comfortable, and discovering your own way through the unknown.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE IN THE WORLD?

My absolute favorite place in the world is my family’s cabin in the woods in Algonquin Park (a provincial park about three hours north of Toronto). It is the most inspiring, calming, detoxifying, rejuvenating, healing place I know. The cabin is set upon a lake surrounded by trees and the only sounds you hear are those from nature. There is no electricity. We cook everything over the fire and truly live in the moment. When we’re hungry, we eat. When we’re tired, we sleep. When we’re hot, we swim. No alarm clocks, no electricity buzzing. It is the place where I feel most in tune with nature, which for me is the most healing thing I can do for myself. Being up there puts everything into perspective; I have the opportunity to completely slow down, clear my mind and return to my daily life feeling revitalized and inspired.

HAVE YOU EVER BEEN SOMEWHERE THAT HAS HAD A PROFOUND EFFECT ON YOUR LIFE?

So many places I have been to have had a profound effect on my life! I learn so much from visiting different places and by immersing myself in different situations. I have lived in New York City now for over 6 years and I think this city has had a profound effect on my life. I am constantly surrounded by very driven, hardworking and motivated individuals. I think the interest in joining a team to start a new business definitely stemmed from the influence of living in NYC. People do such interesting things here and there is definitely a mentality that if you put your mind to it, you can do anything.

HOW HAVE YOU REALIZED YOUR GOALS AND AMBITIONS SO FAR IN LIFE?

A primary goal of mine has always been to embark on a career path that will make me happy and make me feel fulfilled. Aside from co-founding Greenhouse Juice Co., I am an art therapist and yoga teacher. I have been able to combine so many of my passions in life, and I feel very fortunate. I think that is the most important thing; to be happy every day in what you are doing. I am young and my interests are constantly evolving. I am learning so much every day. I feel lucky to have realized many goals and ambitions in my life so far, but there is so much more I want to do.

HOW DO YOU THINK WE SHOULD LIVE LIFE TO TODAY TO ENHANCE OUR FUTURES?

Find what you love to do and what makes you the happiest, and do more of it! It’s simple. Do more of what makes you happy. Be honest with yourself, take risks, don’t be afraid to fail, and continue to learn, learn, learn! To me, those are the basic ingredients for an enhanced and successful future.

WHY IS EXPERIENCE SO IMPORTANT?

All of our experiences are what add up to create our lives. Without life experience, I don’t believe true knowledge can really be acquired. It is through life experience that wisdom is formed and we truly become who we are.

IS IT THE JOURNEY OR THE DESTINATION THAT INSPIRES YOU MOST?

It is always the journey that is most inspiring. I believe that having a destination is important, but living in the present moment is critical. You might learn the most important lessons while getting lost along the journey. Stay along the path and it will lead you to wherever you need to go.
