Beyond all of the glitz and glamour West Hollywood is so known for, this city also happens to be a hotbed for cultural experiences. Home to an impressive swathe of museums, art galleries, concert halls, cinemas and book stores; whichever time of the year you find yourself in WeHo, there’s no doubt that you’ll stumble across a never-ending list of exciting exhibitions and more. This is our pick of the best exhibitions and coming up this winter, just to give you a little taste for cultural West Hollywood.
The Paper Kites at the Troubadour
As one of America’s most diverse nightclubs, previously hosting the likes of Joni Mitchell, Guns and Roses, Elton John and Franz Ferdinand; Troubadour is the place to experience world class acts. More recently, the club has been known for booking some of the hottest emerging bands across the globe, making it the ideal place to listen to some fresh sounds. After a successful first national tour across Australia, rock folk band The Paper Kites will be showcasing their second album at Troubadour on November 12th. Expect a night of lively tunes with soulful lyrics from a dynamic album.
Poetry at Book Soup
For a real cultural experience, you can’t beat an event at Book Soup, an independent bookstore that has graced the Sunset Boulevard for over 30 years. An astonishing 60,000 books will tower over you as you enter, and the friendly staff are happy to help you source whatever you’re after. But it’s the choice of literary events here that really make this store stand out. We particularly like the idea of spending an evening listening to poetry read by some of the best contemporary American poets; Carine Topal, Dorothy Barresi, and Lynne Thompson. So, if you happen to be in the area on November 20th, sit amongst fellow poetry lovers and immerse yourself in this atmospheric evening.
Signature designs at Gray Gallery
For those of us with a passion for art and design, Gray Gallery offers a fantastic range of creations by both well-known and emerging artists. The gallery often holds showcases of the finest abstract designs and paintings, perfect for unique, one-off household items. There’s also a range of beautifully handcrafted rings available for purchase, crafted by the sculpture artist Marie Khouri, which also makes this a great shop as well as a gallery.
Rain Room at LACMA
The Los Angeles County Museum of Art is home to an astonishing 150,000 works of art. Think historic paintings, French oil sketches and the pinnacle of impressionism that is Monet’s Nympheas. And with only a short drive away from the thriving West Hollywood, it’s a perfect place to discover the exciting and unusual exhibitions like the Rain Room, which will run from November to March 2016. An installation created by Random International that will see you enter a room of pouring rain that’s controlled by interesting technology; this might be the only time you choose to get wet in the rain.
If you have a taste for innovative and unusual movies, then you’ll be in awe of the selection on offer at The Cinefamily. Though it’s not technically in West Hollywood, it’ll be a very quick and easy trip from your hotel. This non-profit organisation prides itself on creating an experience where the movie community can come together and share their love for film. Perhaps the most memorable event of the year here will be the showing of Jacques Rivette’s French New Wave work of art, OUT 1 on November 14th. The film has been tough to find since its premiere in 1971 and seeing its almost an incredible 13hours in length, this is sure to be an extraordinary event
