Across the city of Denver there are many annual events to keep visitors entertained throughout the year. From concerts and comedy to food and music festivals, there is bound to be something that will take your fancy. To make your life even easier, and to add further excitement about your visit to the Mile High City, here is a guide to our favourite events in Denver.
NATIONAL WESTERN STOCK SHOW AND RODEO – JANUARY
In this amazing display by rodeo’s biggest superstars, you can watch some of the world’s top reining horses doing their thing, the Denver Professional Bull Rider’s Chute-Out, and the Mexican Rodeo Extravaganza. Head to the National Western Complex and experience the ultimate western performance.
DENVER RESTAURANT WEEK – FEBRUARY
During Denver Restaurant Week, enjoy tantalising set menus at discounted prices from a selection of Denver’s top restaurants. With more than 150 restaurants taking part, they also offer wine, beer and drinks specials. This is a great opportunity for connoisseurs to sample the unusual flavours from restaurants all over the state.
DOORS OPEN DENVER – APRIL
Get behind-the-scenes looks at more than 70 architectural treasures during this free annual event that provides access to many of the city’s prominent and historic buildings.
CINCO DE MAYO FESTIVAL – MAY
A celebration of Hispanic food and culture, this event started out as a local street fair in 1987 and is now the largest Cinco de Mayo celebration in the USA. The event celebrates the Mexican Army’s defeat of invading French forces in the battle of Puebla in 1862. Expect to experience Mexican cultured arts and crafts, Mexican culinary delights, Mariachi bands and Mexican Latino entertainment.
CHERRY CREEK ARTS FESTIVAL– JULY
Colorado’s signature cultural event and a nationally top-ranked celebration of the arts. Highlights include 200 of the nation’s top juried visual artists, curated exhibits, performing and culinary arts, and “Artivities” for the whole family. The Arts Festival is held July 4th weekend in Denver’s upscale Cherry Creek North neighbourhood.
USA PRO CHALLENGE – AUGUST
The USA Pro Challenge (UPC) cycling race takes place each year in Colorado in late summer. The event is the most demanding bike race held on American soil. The world’s best cyclists compete as they experience breathless altitudes day after day, bringing the danger and adrenaline of professional biking to elevations more than three kilometers high. The race is across some of the most picturesque terrain in the world – the Colorado Rocky Mountains. And for the grand finale? Denver, The Mile High City is the place to be!
OKTOBERFEST – SEPTEMBER
Modelled on the famous Munich Oktoberfest in Germany, this is a celebration of all things German (in particular it’s beer). Celebrated over two weekends in September, watch as the city comes alive with costumed dancers, live music, cultural performances, gallons of beer and more traditional German sausages than you can even imagine.
PARADE OF LIGHTS – DECEMBER
The Denver Parade of Lights has been a Christmas tradition since 1975. Over 350,000 spectators line the length of the 2-mile parade route to watch a lively procession of floats, costumed characters and marching bands. The route snakes it way through Downtown Denver to the City and County Building where you can buy tickets for the Grandstand seated area. From here, you can witness competitions in a number of categories, such as the ‘Best Music and Marching Performance’.
