Not many can say they’ve enjoyed a celebrity chef’s menu at 35,000 feet, but fly with South African Airways and you’ll be one of the lucky few who can.
When we heard that chefs Reuben Riffel and Benny Masekwameng were teaming up to create a bespoke menu for business class passengers on SAA, we knew that the results would be exceptional and we couldn’t wait to try it out.
Reuben learnt his trade in Franschoek and has since opened his own, very successful restaurant in the UK. Benny, meanwhile, is more recently known for his role as a judge on the popular Masterchef SA. Together they have devised an innovative dining experience that will certainly leave you wanting more.
Dinner is three courses, sandwiched by canapés and cheese. Passengers can hope to enjoy a starter of smoked salmon served with wasabi mayonnaise and a fennel and pomegranate salad, followed by braised lamb shank and rounded-off with a dark chocolate tart. For a truly South African experience, each course has been brilliantly paired with South African wines. Have a little room left after your evening meal? Then ready yourself for a cooked or continental breakfast, and even some crepes if you’re really looking to indulge.
Sadly this restaurant isn’t one we can visit on the ground, but that just gives us another excuse to fly away with South African Airways more often.
