Long time LA resident with a passion for the WeHo scene, Grant Smillie is a restaurateur whose enthusiasm for the destination was palpable as soon as we spoke…
Tell us a bit about who you are and what you do…
My name is Grant Smillie and I am an Australian living in Los Angeles and operating EP&LP a multi level restaurant and roof deck serving modern Asian cuisine. I also have a PR agency in Australia, a bar and a few other interests but EP is my LA baby.
What inspired you to become a restaurateur?
It’s a love of food and the people that work in the industry. When you love to go out and eat as much as I do and equally travel, it’s a logical step to want to open your own business. It’s a very busy but rewarding craft.
Would you say WeHo has a strong foodie scene?
It is certainly becoming so. There are some really serious operators out here and it seems every year the bar keeps being lifted. Of course there are numerous places serving Californian fare, but also some people really pushing the boat out and experimenting with some fantastic dishes. I feel honoured to be part of the scene
Where in WeHo do the locals tend to go to relax?
That all depends on what you do to relax! If you’re into your sports you could go watch a game at a dive bar like Barneys Beanery or go for a hike at Runyon and see some outdoors. Equally go and shoot some hoops at West Hollywood park or grab a daybed at the Mondrian!
What’s your favourite time of year here and why?
Spring for sure. It starts to warm up a little bit and it’s still green. It’s not crazy busy with tourists but it’s certainly starting to get a vibe.
What do you think it is that makes WeHo such an attractive destination to visitors?
It’s so central to everything and you get the amenity of places like The Grove, Beverly Centre and the like all at your fingertips and it’s equidistant to Santa Monica and Downtown.
Finally, describe WeHo in three words…
