Often referred to as the Norway of the East for its stunning fjords, dramatic coastlines and sleepy atmosphere, Musandam feels a million miles away from the hustle and bustle found elsewhere in Oman. Honestly, we couldn’t have been more charmed by this stunning oasis of serenity…
AT A GLANCE
Musandam is the smallest region in Oman, standing on its own distinct peninsular and separated from the rest of the country by the United Arab Emirates, with its closest airport in Dubai. Famed for the beauty of its crystalline waters, striking coastlines and labyrinthine fjords, the quaint nature of the fishing village communities and tribes that live quietly here make this a fascinating destination. It’s little known and often overlooked in the world of travel, but as one of Oman’s most beautiful and serene spots, we just had to tell you about it.
WHAT TO SEE
The incredible land and seascapes that make this peninsula such a fascinating destination allow for some exciting opportunities for outdoor exploration. Whether you’re up high in the mountains or diving down below the clear waters, you’re in for a real treat. The expansive coral reefs that surround Musandam provide exotic bursts of colour that are home to over 900 species of fish, making this a world class spot for diving. There’s even the chance to come face to face with a Whale Shark if you’re in the area at the right time.
Musandam’s main town, Khasab, is a great spot for a slice of history and a taste of palm dates. Khasab Castle is the main attraction if you’re interested in the background of this captivating district. Overlooking the harbour, this is a structure that inspires thoughts of magical Arabian night’s tales. Now an informative museum, it’s the perfect place to go for an insight into the history and culture of Musandam.
WHY WE LOVE IT
Really, who expects to find such unadulterated serenity in the shadow of Dubai and Abu Dhabi? We certainly didn’t, and what a pleasant surprise it was. From the depths of the sea to the heights of the fjords, an overwhelming sense of calm emanates from every pore of Musandam, so it’s the perfect place to retreat to after tackling the commotion of the nearby metropolises.
