Our Guide to Nicaragua

If you want glistening beaches, verdant tropical jungle and flaming volcanoes, you need look no further than Nicaragua – a country that quite simply ‘has it all’.

At a glance

This Central American wonder is rich in stunning landscapes still untouched by mass market tourism, charming colonial towns with cobbled streets and beautiful cathedrals, warm coastal waters and unbeatable beaches with a multitude of adventurous activities to enjoy, not to mention, smoking hot volcanoes. Nicaragua has a chain of volcanoes running from the north to the south along the country’s Pacific side.

Many of these volcanoes offer some great adventure possibilities, such as hiking, climbing, camping, swimming in crater lakes and perhaps the most exhilarating of all, volcano surfing. Nicaragua is adrenaline inducing for all the right reasons.

What to see

Nicaragua is the ultimate adventure playground, and the ideal unusual holiday choice for those who like a bit of an adrenaline injection; which you’ll certainly get zip lining through the jungle canopy, trekking and horse riding around the Masaya Volcano range and last but not least, perhaps one of the most extreme activities in the world; volcano surfing. In Cerro Negro you can ride the ‘ring of fire’ as you surf down the side of the volcano, passing over still warm ashes as you go.

More extreme volcano action is to be had on Ometepe Island, which is the largest island in Lake Nicaragua as well as the largest volcanic island inside a fresh water lake in the world. Ometepe boasts an abundance of wildlife and fauna, and of course, its very own two volcanoes; Concepcion and Maderas. Here you can hike, climb or mountain bike around the volcanoes or kayak through the surrounding lily-laden lakes.

Why we like it

It’s not every day you get to surf down a volcano surrounded by some of the most beautiful natural scenery in the world. Need we say more?
