This province is home to some of the most beautiful white beaches, coral bays and jaw-dropping mountains in the world; it is a treasure trove of marvels. If there is one place you should stay when visiting the Philippines, Palawan has everything you could dream of.
At a glance
Dotted with over 1,700 islands, this irregular coast line plays host to paradisiacal beauty. South west of the Philippines, this slice of island life is dropped in aquamarine lagoon waters with mountainous islands studded between the coral. The mountain peaks towering up from the ocean are cocooned by vibrant marine life, making Palawan a diver’s dream. Just an hour and a half flight from Manila, you can go from the buzzing capital, to paradise in no time. The waters here are so clear, it’s hard to tell if the mountains are reflecting off the ripples, or if it’s the marine coral magnified from below.
What to see
Once you’ve explored the island valleys and deserted beaches or dove down deep to the world’s best wreck diving site at Coron Bay, head back onto mainland Palawan and another world of adventure awaits. In the heart of Puerto Princesa, central Palawan, kick back on the sweeping Sabang Beach fringed with palms, hammocks and tropical jungle. But it doesn’t stop there, take a boat inland through topaz green waters and be introduced to the 8.2-kilometer underground river within the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park. Drift blissfully along this hidden treasure adorned with intricate and enchanting rock formations. The second longest subterranean river in the world is now also tipped as one of the world’s wonders – and we can see why.
For diving enthusiasts who are looking for a trip of a lifetime, join a liveaboard expedition to another UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Tubbataha Reefs National Park. This underwater paradise is located in the heart of the Coral Triangle. Need we say more?
Why we like it
An island surrounded by thousands of sub islands, this province is home to the adventurer’s favourites, in particular El Nido. Just off of Palawan’s mainland, El Nido’s beach resort plays host to luxury and Mother Nature in perfect harmony. The stilt built suites make a perfect bolthole in between exploring the 20 different diving spots or hidden lagoons, such as Bacuit Bay. After a long day in your flippers, come back to dry land and treat yourself to a traditional Hilot massage.
If you’re looking for that tropical and exotic island experience with a touch of luxury, Palawan is waiting for you.
