Due south on Route 5, we left the vast, animated cityscape of LA behind us and headed for a more low-key corner of the golden state. The journey down to San Diego took us along a great sweep of Pacific coast, with its indigo waters, orange groves, chic resorts and rugged hilly landscapes reaching further inland. An adventure in its own right.
We were headed for a city that is lauded for its amazing quality of life; a relaxed, year-round sun spot, fringing the southern shoreline of California. After enjoying the famously laid-back lifestyle on so many of our travels here, the added zest from neighbouring Mexico was going to be a new twist in San Diego. We were keen to soak up some of this laissez faire attitude, to really experience the vibe of the city before capturing it through the camera lens.
We discovered quickly that the heart of San Diego is found on the beach, all 70 miles of it. The endless stretches of gold sand are central to life here, seamlessly linking urban architecture with the aquatic. But the cacophony of neighbourhoods set back from the coast also gave us a good snapshot of the inner workings of our subject; there’s the gentle sophistication of La Jolla, the beautiful historic buildings in the Gaslamp Quarter, Hispanic influence woven through the lush greenery of Balboa Park, the trendy, vivacious streets of Hillcrest. Beyond the sun and sea, the happy, relaxed atmosphere, and the culinary delights, what we discovered was a place with many different facets. We hope we can bring it all to life for you through the local tastemakers – it really is a wonderful place.
