Eat fresh and live fresh; this should be the motto for life in Santa Barbara. With rich Californian soil and year round sunshine beating down on the coast, town and rolling countryside beyond, it really is no surprise that Santa Barbara produces some seriously delectable goods. Almonds, pistachios, arugula (or rocket), baby kale, spinach, lemons, avocados – the list goes on and they are all native to the area. Diets here run with the seasons, so you know that you’ll always be eating the freshest produce on offer. It’s no wonder everyone is so beautiful and full of life; this is the American’s version of la dolce vita.
Scattered around the town any day, bar Mondays, you’ll find a whole host of enticing colourful foods at the Farmers Market, including seafood, fish, meats and cheeses and of course vegetables and fruits. You’ll be spoilt for choice, but make the most of the tasters which mean you can try before you buy. The new Public Market is open until late at night, so we recommend soaking up the civilized hubbub and grabbing dinner from one of the vendors. A truly authentic slice of Santa Barbaran gastronomy.
For a slightly different market day experience, on Tuesdays you can take the ‘Foodie Stroll’, joining one of the city’s acclaimed chefs on his daily run to pick up ingredients before bringing them back to his kitchen to prepare a delicious dinner. Pair that with beautiful views of the American Riviera, the county’s finest tipples and atmosphere to boot, and you have a recipe for a truly memorable evening.
