Likelihood is you’ll be so enthralled by the city of Toronto that you’ll barely find reason to leave. That said, there’s so much to see and do in the surrounding area, we’ll ensure there’s time in your itinerary to see it all. After all, Toronto’s incredible proximity to stunning landscapes and rolling winelands is part of what makes it such a special, all-encompassing destination. Take a pick from our list of favourites and you’ll be able to leave Toronto after breakfast and be back for dinner, having soaked up some true Canadian culture in between.
A trip to Toronto requires a visit to the world-famous Niagara Falls in our books. These are the widest waterfalls in the world, with the largest volume of water rushing through. Trips out to Niagara are within 2hrs by road, but the falls can be accessed by rail or air as well. Thrill seekers will enjoy a helicopter ride over the falls, but equally spectacular views can be taken in from the Skylon Tower. If you can wait, the falls are lit up by night and the display is absolutely stunning.
Heli-golfing has to be the most spectacular way to enjoy the sport, and with stunning landscapes and world-class courses in abundance around Toronto, you can expect one of the best games you’ve ever experienced. With no long drives to contend with, simply hop into your aircraft and soar above the city, travelling out towards the Ontario countryside and hopefully a hole-in-one. This will no doubt form a memory you’ll hold dear for a lifetime, and a story you’ll want to tell time and time again…
If you haven’t sampled Canadian wine, you simply haven’t lived, and a trip to the Niagara wine country is essential. Regular tours and private tastings are available throughout the year, so there’s simply no excuse not to try this Ontarian nectar. The wineries can be found approximately 2hrs from downtown Toronto and are set in wonderful countryside; they’re not far from Niagara Falls either, meaning you could tick both off on an idyllic day-trip out of the city.
A Northern Tour
Fly north, past the city skyscrapers and quaint suburban neighbourhoods, and you’ll soon enter a wild paradise. The astounding Canadian Shield region is one of sparkling lakes, fresh air and sweeping forests. Enjoy lunch at one of the stunning resorts before moving on to immerse yourself in the natural beauty that abounds here. You’ll feel a world away from Toronto, but your quick flight back will only serve to remind you that this is a city with so much to offer, right on its doorstep.
Hot air ballooning
Romantic and serene, gliding through the air at sunrise as Ontario wakes up far below you is one of Canada’s most unforgettable experiences. Take your pick from a morning or evening balloon trip, which launch only 1.5hrs from downtown Toronto. This is the ideal trip out of town for those looking for some alone time in a gorgeous setting.
Come wind or rain, sunshine or snow, there’s never a time when the activity at Scenic Caves ceases. In summer, venture across the vast suspension bridge, or down into the deep caves forged by glaciers over the years. In winter, go cross country skiing or snow-shoeing at the Nordic centre. Only 2hrs from Toronto, Scenic Caves is not far from Lake Huron and is the most extraordinary and adventurous day out.
