The Great Ocean Road is just as great as its name suggests. Expect breathtakingly dramatic views, thriving wildlife and an unforgettable Australian experience on this eight night luxury vacation. You’ll kick start things in the buzzing cosmopolitan city of Melbourne before heading off on an ocean-side trip of discovery. It’s the perfect balance of surf and turf.
Arriving at Melbourne International Airport you’ll be whisked straight to the city center. Settle into your very chic suite at The Cullen in the hip area of Prahran and take a moment soak up the view across the city from your panoramic window. With two days to acclimatize, you’ll have plenty of time to get to grips with the city’s quirky culture; take a private tour with an expert local guide or head to the beach at St Kilda to catch some rays. For a chance to discover what makes this intriguing and creative city tick we suggest taking a Hidden Secrets Tour, where you’ll gain exclusive insight into Melbourne’s communities and movers and shakers.Read more
Wake up bright eyed and bushy tailed because today you’ll take off on the ultimate Australian road trip. Pick up your hire car and make for the Mornington Peninsula, your base for the next two days. You’ll be staying in utter seclusion at the Big Blue Backyard where romantic hideaways offer quiet luxury.
If you can tear yourself away from your own private patch of paradise then there’s plenty to do. It goes without saying that the surrounding beaches and bays are well worth of a dip. If you’d rather set out with more purpose then there are dolphins to swim with at Port Phillip, boats to sail, fish to catch and award-winning wines to sample at their makers’ cellar doors. How about rounding it all off with a horse ride along the deserted beach at Gunnamatta before returning to your hideaway for a soak under the stars in the outdoor bath.
A coastline of biblical proportion
When the Peninsula has worked its magic on you it’s time to get back on the open road and head for Cape Otway and the world-famous Great Ocean Road home to the iconic 12 Amailles. These towering stacks of naturally formed limestone dotted along the shoreline are a dramatic sight best seen at dawn or dusk. If you fancy taking to the skies again, then a scenic flight around the Amailles and London Arch will be unforgettable. Back on terra firma a stroll through the fern gullies and eucalypts of Maits Rest Rainforest rounds the day off nicely. Head back to your room at the award-winning Great Ocean Ecolodge where, for two nights, you can wake to the sight of wild kangaroos grazing in the morning mist. Heavenly, we say.
Wind it up on a mountain top
Moving on to Port Fairy, you’ve got two days to fill before heading back to reality. We recommend a mix of culture and adventure. Make sure you visit Tower Hill where the State Game Reserve sits in the crater of an extinct volcano. Thousands of years of heritage are home to abundant indigenous wildlife and Aboriginal history. A trip out to The Grampians National Park will reward you with rugged mountain scenery and plenty to explore; we recommend keeping your eyes out for Aboriginal rock paintings dotted all over the site. The sandstone ridges also provide prime rock climbing and mountain biking territory too. Take a deep breath of Australian air from your hilly perch before making for the road one last time. To immerse yourself further into the stunning region of the Grampians we can arrange an extra night staying at the cozy yet innovative Boroka Downs Hotel in the heart of the stunning countryside. With your batteries fully recharged, head to the airport; it’s time to go home to show off your healthy glow.
