Sanctuary Baines’ Camp, Okavango Delta

You’ll discover the Sanctuary Baines’ Camp blending seamlessly into the magnificent Okavango Delta in Botswana. Named after the 19th Century explorer Robert Baines this intimate lodge has just five luxurious suites so you’ll instantly feel at one with the breathtaking nature and wildlife that surrounds it. This is an exhilarating yet idyllic spot where you’re almost guaranteed to spy the most elusive of African creatures either on foot, by boat or 4×4. Return with wide eyes to take in the sunset and enjoy some fine dining in the evening.

Location

Encircled by long grasses and papaya beds the Baines’ Camp is built on wooden platforms above the Boro River bordering the Moremi game reserve on the Okavango Delta. Fly from either Maun or Kasane to the lodge’s private airstrip where you’ll then be whisked off on a 50-minute boat trip to your accommodation. From here you can embark on a game drive, walk with elephants or get up close and personal with the water-dwelling wildlife on a mokoro lagoon cruise (a dugout canoe to us). Expect to see everything from hippos and crocodiles on the river to zebra and buffalo roaming the plains around the lodge.

Your room

As well as being aesthetically pleasing your suite is eco-friendly as well. Incorporated into the wooden design are over 150,000 recycled aluminium cans which act as extra insulation for the residence. The rooms all feature their own private terraces with open-air showers overlooking a peaceful lagoon where you can watch the animal kingdoms go by. If you want to feel that extra inch closer to the African bush your sumptuous four-poster bed can be wheeled onto the veranda and you can sleep under the stars.

Why we like it?

The Baines’ Camp maintains a totally traditional and natural feel without sacrificing any opulence. We love the Bush Brunch where Western and African make the most spectacular of meetings. Enjoy a full continental breakfast in a secluded spot on the delta and you’ll be joined by three gentle giants for the authentic and unique elephant interaction experience. There’s no better way to relax after an exciting day on the plains than to indulge in a dip in the pool followed by a delicious three-course meal cooked by the excellent local chef.
