20 minutes west from Lake Louise, Alberta, Emerald Lake Lodge rests in the very heart of Yoho National Park, (the name Yoho derives from a Native American word for awe, pretty apt for this breathtaking setting). Again, the clue is in the title for Emerald Lake Lodge’s immediate surroundings, set in a secluded 13 acre peninsula jutting out into the enticingly still water of Emerald Lake; a stillness that seems to envelop the whole area with a sense of calm.

All of the cabins display a special sort of rustic charm that can only come from calling such a stunning mountainous setting home – yet the strong timber frames and wood-burning fireplaces are offset with luxurious touches like invitingly plump beds and sumptuous fabrics. Opt for the Lake Room, where you can stoke up the fire, fling back the doors to your private balcony and take in the views of the glassy turquoise water of Emerald Lake.

It is the overwhelming sense of tranquillity that surrounds Emerald Lake Lodge that makes a sojourn here so worthwhile – less common vacation, more restorative retreat. In place of TV’s you have the comforting sound of wood crackling on the fire and outside, the murmur of wildlife as you wander through Emerald Lake’s epic landscape. The heady alpine air should have helped you acquire a healthy appetite in ready anticipation of sampling the hearty braised elk tenderloin or alpine beef in the soft-lighting surrounds of the Lodge’s Mount Burgess Dining Room.
