Le Lotus Bleu, Ishigaki, Japan

Standing proud in the heart of Japan’s stunning Yaeyama archipelago, this authentic homestay is the ideal place for those who want to sample Ishigaki’s island lifestyle in its truest form. An elegantly grand 19th Century Japanese house, floor-to-ceiling bay windows fill the simple and refined rooms with sparkling Japanese sunshine. Entrust yourself to the capable hands of the lovely Franco Japanese family who are your hosts and discover Japanese living through a wealth of activities ranging from Ocean yoga detoxes to cooking classes, to even trying your hand at playing Okinawan music.

Location

Nestled in the quaint village of Shiraho, this gem offers a glimpse of untainted Ishigaki spirit and culture whilst only being twenty minutes’ drive from Ishigaki city, the economic hub of the Yaeyama archipelago. Shiraho held several Matsuris (festivals) every year where you can see the Yaeyama culture at its best. A few meters from the house the mesmerising Shiraho lagoon awaits, home to the sea’s famous blue coral reef – one of the biggest in the world. Explore one of the best snorkelling spots of Ishigaki, side by side with captivating Manta rays.

Your room

Think unadulterated traditional Japanese simplicity, with woven mat floors and elegantly sparse furnishings. Wide bay-windows open the house up into the vibrant tropical garden and terrace. Take your pick from one of six spacious rooms, or experience this Japanese retreat en masse with the option of renting out the entire house.

Why we like it

This unique gem offers an authentic experience like none other, and we truly believe you’ll find no better base from which to completely immerse yourself in Japanese island life. With traditional features such as the Irori (a kind of fire place in the middle of the house), its very own theater stage for Japanese performances, and a garden surrounded by the typical stone walls that give their name to the island, this is a one of a kind place from which to soak up the gorgeous nature and cultural wealth that surrounds you.
